Hello all my artsy friends! Have you ever experienced a creative block? You want to put a page together, but you just don’t know where to start and you are at a loss for inspiration. I have seen all kinds of great advice on the subject from using templates to perusing galleries to revisiting your favorite pages. But the one thing I’ve found helpful in this situation is to listen to your artistic soul and create with what makes you happy. Here are some ideas for finding your creative happy place:
1. Working with a particular color or color family (brights, pastels, neutrals, etc.).
2. Creating a specific style of page.
3. Learning a new technique.
4. Scrapping with your favorite photos.
5. Using your favorite elements.
My favorite method for overcoming creative block is to pick a kit (or kits) that I love, put all my favorite elements on a blank page and then just play. Sometimes it clicks right away, sometimes it takes a little while longer, but playing with my favorite types of elements always seems to wake up my creativity. Here is a page that I recently created to help me work through a creative rut:
I took all my favorite elements from It’s a Theory and Perfectly Geeky by Etc. by Danyale and added them to a blank white(ish) background paper. Then I just played with them – moving them around the page until the multiple cluster design started to form – and after that it just took on a life of its own.
My list of “happy” creative elements included the following:
1. Bright, fun colors
2. Stitched elements
3. Leaves
4. A “geeky” subject matter inspired by one of my favorite TV shows (Big Bang Theory)
5. A photo-less design
Pablo Picasso was absolutely right when he said, “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” The next time you find yourself in a creative rut, try working your way out of it by listening to your artistic soul and playing with what makes you happy.
Until next time ~
Judie
