Hello! Last month I shared how I use repetition and short sentences for some of my simple journaling tips. This month, I have been focusing on pulling together journaling + photography to capture my life and document what is important to me, and I did this using the photo prompts and journaling prompts I shared previously.
Combining the photo prompts and journaling prompts and simple storytelling techniques really helps me document the memories and stories I want to share. These three elements work well for me, and helped me easily create a simple layout that reflects exactly what I’m feeling and want to preserve. Here is my thought process on how I used these elements this past month to create a new layout:
- From my journaling/story prompts, from my story prompts, i focused on “on my mind”, which I interpreted to mean how to be more present and acknowledge the good things right now.
- I also chose the photo prompt “focus” and made an effort to consciously focus my camera lens on things around me and taking photos while also focusing on what pleases me, captures my eye, shifts my mindset and helps me stay present in the moment. I also used this prompt to reframe my mental focus – refocusing my negative thoughts.
- I used the storytelling technique of short sentences and word repetition to keep me motivated to document. I find that I really like to use repetition and short sentences in my journaling, and also love to combine it as a key feature in my layout design.
- Using the short sentences and having them scattered on my layout, instead of journaling in paragraph form, adds a design element and can help make the journaling a focal point on the page.
- When journaling like this, I frequently will start each sentence or “mini paragraph” with the same word for journaling continuity.
- I really like to use an element that draws the eye to each sentence and adds to the design of the layout.
- Here is the layout I created with my chosen photo prompt, journaling prompt, and simple word repetition technique:

Using prompts for photography and storytelling is a great way to be more present in life and help spark ideas for memory keeping and sharing our world, especially the everyday details. Incorporating journaling as a design element can bring additional interest to the layout and help you create pages that you enjoy.
