Greetings, Happy Pad Scrappers!
Polly Liana here, to introduce you to a fun and moving Easter tradition that has been in our family for generations. Since the 1040’s, my family has been creating eggs for our family’s “egg tree.” My Great-Grandmother started it and it’s been continuing ever since then. The idea is simple: decorate a few blown-out eggs every year to hang on simple branches, which have been tucked into a heavy base.
If you are unfamiliar with blown-out eggs, here are some tips:
Carefully poke small holes in the top and bottom of a raw egg.
Poke a long “doll” needle (or something similar) into the center of the egg and gently swish it around to break the yolk.
Hold the egg over a bowl or sink and blow hard into the top hole. Note: this takes a LOT of work.
When all the raw egg has been blown out, rinse if you like then leave the egg for a day or two to dry.
Using the doll needle and thin ribbon knotted at the end, pull the ribbon through the egg from the bottom to the top. Alternatively, you can use thin pipe cleaners.
Decorate the egg gently with acrylic paint or sharpies. Make sure you add the date!
Tuck some sturdy branches into an ice bucket or heavy pot with weights or heavy stones. If there are not a lot of small twigs on which to hang the eggs, you can add some “hooks” made with brown florist wire, as I did here:
Here are some examples of eggs that my Great-Grandmother made:
Here’s the egg tree at our house. We use eggs every year to commemorate important events. It’s like a beautiful, fragile seasonal scrapbook!
Hope I’ve inspired you to start an egg tree of your own. Have a wonderful weekend, friends!
