Hybrid Watercolor-Use Your Digital Kits

October 14, 2018 by The Lilypad Leave a Comment

Hey hey!  It’s katrinahunt13 back on the blog today to share a fun thing I did for my post today.  I recently decided that I was going to learn to watercolor.  Well, I haven’t quite learned yet, but have been practicing.

I also thought you had to be able to draw, turns out you don’t!  I didn’t know that people traced things to watercolor, which is where this post is going!

There are TONS of fun digital kits that have wonderful items that you could watercolor.  It just takes a few minutes to trace onto watercolor paper and you can paint the image!  NOTE:  These would be for personal use only, unless you talk to the designer or have bought a commercial use product.  I would still talk to the designer, even if it was commercial use just to cover bases.

So here is what I did for today’s post.  Now, it’s not going in the Smithsonian or any famous art museum, but it’s takes practice and that just what this is!  Now, let’s see how to do it!

Find an image in a digital kit that you like.  I used a flower bunch from Little Butterfly Wings kit. M3 for September Add On Words.  I was drawn to this kit for the flowers and cameras!  Plus these are easy images to watercolor!  You don’t want anything too complicated to try to color in.

Next, I printed out the flowers on copy paper and enlarged them to make it a little easier to color in.  Once I printed out, then I made a sandwich of watercolor paper, graphite tracing paper, and then my printed out image.  I taped the graphite paper and printed image onto my watercolor paper to hold them in place.

Then I took the end of my paint brush and lightly traced over the image.  You could use anything for this, even a pen, the key is to “lightly” trace.  You don’t want the lines showing up thru your painting.

Once traced then you can go to town coloring in with your favorite watercolors or watercolor brush pens.  I used Daniel Smith watercolors to color this.

I am still learning techniques, but practice is the only way to learn them.  So why not make it a fun image to color in??

So give it a try!!!  You might find a new hobby to love!!!
