Greetings, Happy Scrappers!
Polly Liana here to show you a little something I’ve been working on– fairy furniture. I inherited my Mom’s fascination for fairies at an early age. She used to read to me from a book called “The Glass Harmonica” that was all about fairies and other magical woodland creatures. As a child, I loved the idea of tiny magical people hiding around our house. Now as an adult, my family lives next to the woods and when we go for walks, I always ask my daughters to keep an eye out for signs of fairies. After seeing a few neat fairy houses on the Internet, I decided to make some fairy furniture of my own so I could surprise my daughters in our backyard.
First, I went to my local craft and floral shop and purchased several different widths of sticks for my project. I also got some wooden disks and moss. I cut the sticks into similar lengths according to what I needed to make the chairs. I then used a Dremmel tool to gently create some grooves in which the sticks could fit so they would lie flat (think Lincoln Logs). I then used a glue gun to put all the parts together. I hid the glue with bits of moss, which covered up the globs of glue. Savvy furniture makers on the web describe the strings of glue as “cobwebs” which I think is very clever.
I hid the furniture under a tree next to our flower garden and when my four-year-old woke up I told her excitedly to go search for the special thing I’d found in our garden. She just about lost her mind when she saw the little table and chairs! Later, I had to take them in because the dew and cold night air was making them fall apart. Also, some slugs had decided to sit in the chairs and left some slime on them. I told my daughter that the fairies must have left on vacation. I’ll put them out again sometime soon.
The nice thing about the furniture is that it’s meant to look rustic and funky so it absolutely shouldn’t look perfect. Still, it took me a bit of trial and error before I got them to look the way I wanted them to look. I have to warn you: once you start making these things, you get kind of hooked. In fact, I created a Pinterest board with other ideas for fairy items. Check it out:

If you’re looking for a great book about fairies and other creatures, check out this one by Miss Edythe McFate called Modern Fairies, Dwarves, Goblins and Other Nasties: A Practical Guide (a warning: the fairies in this book are not your Disney-type fairies. They’re sinister and devious.):
And here’s the most wonderful thing: Our own Jacque Larsen has designed a kit of adorable fairies to coordinate with this blog post (she’s magical like that). Check out the cuteness…
