January 7 - Heirloom

Wow!! Thanks for the challenge, these MOCs really push us out of our comfort zone huh!! That’s a good thing – makes me reflect, ponder & be grateful!
I've never been much of an "Heirloom" person, my family seems to be very into antiques, but I've never been that intrigued by them, it seems weird, most people are enamored with antiques, I could take or leave them. If I were psychic & could psychically ‘get the story’ by holding an object, I’d be into them, but alas… I’m not and the idea of a native American using the ‘same’ arrowhead I found in the desert to shoot an animal… meh… not so much! And if I were a zillionaire maybe I’d want to decorate with antiques…
I guess these little hand painted Russian boxes would count as an heirloom. My ex got them in Russia on one of his business trips like 15 years ago and while there he put a lot of thought & research into ones that would be ‘good investments’, ect… Who knows, I do like them, they are hand painted with horse hairs & they also have mother of pearl stone inlaid.
The unicorn makes my heart melt, it was from my son’s father, who didn’t have an artistic bone in his body, but his SIL took him under her wing and together they made this magical unicorn for me as a Christmas gift in 1995. It was the sweetest thing ever, so yeah… it’s a heirloom to me that’s for sure.

Question: Can it be several things that are of the same type? One of my grandmas did "tatting" and the other one did crochet. Both made tablecloths and table runners with their own style of art. I wouldn't feel right featuring one piece, so could I do a layout about heirloom lace, featuring one or two pieces from each grandmother?

glad to have taken the machine out, as I noticed it needed a good clean with the mildew getting to it, and covering its surface, I did take a pic before cleaning, as it looked older with it... I also cherish a handmade little booklet that Grandma Rose made to keep her needles in order, and I still use them all the time, and they are also over a hundred years old, and no rust or anything...

Do you have pictures of your Mom etc to go along with your documenting/journaling? It is a stretch on the idea of an heirloom but a photo too can be handed down as an heirloom along with the idea.

Yes I have many pictures of my Mom.

After trying to decide what to use as my subject, then looking for pictures, and PSP crashing on me while doing the layout (losing all my journaling), I finally got it done. Only to realize I never used the word Heirloom. So after exchanging messages with Christa, I got it changed and here it is.

Journaling: Greg’s grandma, Anna Vollmer, was a fantastic cookie baker. These are the
only recipes I have in her handwriting. I regret that today most recipes are computer printouts.
The wooden spoon is hand carved and dated 1940; Unfortunately I have no idea who
carved it. But it is a great spoon for stirring cookie dough, sturdy and able to efficiently scrape the sides of the bowl.

When I went to the kitchen to look for the old wooden spoon Greg asked what I was doing. I
said my assignment today is to scrap an heirloom. I pulled his grandmother’s spoon from the crock that holds utensils. Hie got a strange look on his face and said,

You’re going to scrap it?

Yes

“Like destroy it?”

OH No! Just the opposite. I’m going to preserve it!
