Hi there pad friends!! It’s Katrina, aka katrinahunt13 to share a layout using a digital template, but also making part of it into a cut file. It takes a little practice, but if you do hybrid or are thinking about it, it’s quite the fun thing to do. Plus it expands what you can do with your digital supplies.
First of all my layout! As soon as I saw this collection of templates, I knew I wanted to do hybrid layouts with them. This is the Big Words Dressed Up by Fiddle-Dee-Dee Designs and I loved the big picture in this one. And I used Just Jaimee’s December Storyteller Kit|Journal Cards for my “supplies”.
NOTE: I have a wide format printer, but all of this will work if you size your template down to 8×8 and go from there with your pictures and your die cut.
I started by opening the template in Photoshop and clipping my pictures onto the photo layers. I then moved those layers to a new background and then printed them out. This ensured the size stayed the same as what was in the template and also gave me a round photo to work with. Sorry, I forgot a screenshot of that!
I isolated the die cut layer (they were grouped) for the “cold” outline and moved it to another background layer. Because it is white, it will not trace well in Silhouette Studio. I have found it’s quicker to add color using your bucket to make it easier to trace.
Once you have colored in the die cut, I then exported as a PNG. Opened in Silhouette Studio and traced and then cut out of the paper of my choice.
I loved that these letters were all welded together and just ready to trace and cut. I did not change sizes on anything, just pulled into the software and used the size that it was.
Then I started putting together my layout. I printed a few papers, used print and cut for some elements and lots of foam adhesive! You can see here how well the “cold” cut out of my Silhouette. I love that I can add bits and pieces and give dimension, even though everything is paper! It gives your page so much feeling when you back die cuts with different papers.
I kept pretty much to the template and filled in with elements that I print and cut. I love to add twine and wind it around and under things.
So, I hope you look at templates in a new light now. I am always trying get people to try hybrid, it’s lots of fun! If you ever have questions, just feel free to message me here at the pad!! Have a great week!
