Aloha, Pad Scrappers!
Polly Liana here, with some tips for great beach photos. For most of you, ’tis the season for some beach time. As a girl born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii but living now an hour from Cape Cod Massachusetts, I am very familiar with beach life. If you’re considering taking some snaps during your sandy vacations this year, bring your camera and try out some of these ideas. Ready? Here we go!
1. Bump up the colors
Most beaches offer a unique opportunity to see gorgeous shades of blues and greens, along with the bright colors of swimsuits, beach balls and the like. Keep an eye out for those lovely pops of color and fill your shot with them. Also, try bumping up the saturation a bit in post processing.
2. Please the eyes
Great photos can pull the viewer’s eyes all around by creating leading lines to guide the eye. I love the way light and lines can make my eyes travel all over a scene without even realizing it. In this photo, your eyes travel down the path to the beach:
… travel up the weathered fence…
… and peek at the parent and child exploring the beach in an approaching storm.
I also love symmetry, balance and patterns on the sand:
3. Look all around
Change your perspective– look up,
look down…
look for action!
4. Get up early, stay up late
Some of the very best photos you can get on the beach are at dawn and dusk. The light from the sun reflecting off the water really is spectacular.
5. Capture the details
Of course, all your beach photos are going to look the same from year to year unless you also capture the little details and memories that you don’t want to forget.
Hope you’ve gotten inspired to try some of these shots yourself. Then come to the Lilypad for some terrific coordinating beach kits. Upload them to our gallery and tell us about your vacation in our forums.
Happy beaching!
