    JANUARY 6: Torn Title

Hello everyone! We are nearing the end of our first full week of MOC and you are all doing great! Today I have a fun tutorial to add some interest to a title on your layout. We are going to add torn pieces of paper to title letters. To comply with this challenge you must:

    1. Create a title where each letter is either an alpha or a font (can be covered by paper or plain).
    2. Add at least one torn piece of paper layered on top of each letter.
    3. Create a layout using your Torn Title featured prominently. I must be able to see the torn edges clearly even in the resized version posted in the gallery.

Now I’m going to show you in general terms how to achieve this fun look. My sample images will show Photoshop, but the steps are simple enough that they will work in most programs.

    1. First you will need to find a bold (aka thick) alpha or font to use for the base of your letters. I used a bold font named SC Gum Kids at 163 pt size. Using either a font or an alpha, create your plain title.

    2. Add a drop shadow to the title and then clip a paper to the title.
Clipping is CTRL+ALT+G for my old PS.

    3. Now comes the fun part! You may use any method to create a torn edge across your title, but Lynn Grieveson has very generously provided a template that you can use to make it super easy. Here’s the template she created:

    4. Open either the .psd or the .pngs from the provided template and place them in the layers above your Title layer AND above the paper we clipped to the title in Step 2. Clip all the template layers to your Title layer. Here is what my layers look like:

    Layers Step 4.JPG
    2021-01-06 Torn Title Tutorial_Step 4 small.jpg

    5. What if you don’t want blue paper for torn paper? This will take a few extra steps, but they are pretty easy too. Pick a new paper. Select the “paper clipping mask” layer in your layer palette and then drag the new paper in there (Layer 3). It’s going to look funny for a minute, but we will fix that.

    Layers Step 5.JPG

    6. The new paper is covering our first paper layer, so we need to fix that. In Photoshop, hold down CTRL and click on the icon for the “paper clipping mask” layer. This will put marching ants around the lower portion of our torn paper. Once you have the marching ants, and with the new paper layer selected (Layer 3) hit CTRL+J. This will create a Layer via Copy. This creates a new layer of just the paper in the selection area. You will have to clip this layer to all the other layers.

    Step 6.jpg

    7. Once you clip the newly created layer (Layer 4) you can just delete the full sized paper (Layer 3).

    Step 7.jpg
Layer 3 is the full sized paper we added in Step 5.
Layer 4 is the newly created Layer via Copy.
    You can delete Layer 3.

Viola! Your Torn Title is complete!

Here is a layout I created with my Torn Title:

    Requirements:

    Notes:
    • The foreground and background papers of the torn title can be the same paper or 2 different papers. You may also add more than one piece of torn paper to each letter.
    • The orientation of each torn piece of paper does not matter.
    • Each letter can use different papers if you would like.
    • You may add a border to your title, but that is optional and NOT required.
    • You may use the provided template or any other template that creates the same effect.
    • You may use an action to create a torn edge if you prefer that method instead of this tutorial.

    General Requirements:

Your page must be a new page in order to count for the Month of Challenges.
Your page must be posted in three places:
    1. Uploaded to the TLP Gallery (not an outside hosting site).
    2. Posted in your page thread you created in the MOC Layouts Folder. You should have one post per completed challenge page. If you complete all 31 challenges, your thread should contain 31 posts. Please do not comment in the participants’ page threads so we can keep them clean.
    3. Posted in this thread. People can comment here if they wish.

Your page must contain Lilypad product (pages with photos and font only do not count). If you use product from other stores, your pages must contain at least 75% current Lilypad product (currently for sale in the store from either permanent designers or guest designers).

Saving this post for clarifications. :agree

Q: Are the steps in PSE similar?
A: Yes, they should work the same in PSE

    Q: Is photoless ok?
    A: Yes!

    Q: Is 9 x 12" format ok?
A: Yes, this one doesn't have to be square.

Q: Is it allowed to use the torn template to tear off part of the letters leaving a torn edge? or should we only be using the torn template to layer a separate torn paper on top of the letters so you can see the whole letter with a torn paper on it? Hope that makes sense.
A: Yes, that does make sense... and yes, that would be fine if you tear part of the base layer off as long as you also add a second torn layer on top. Hope that helps!

    Thanks @Becky
    1. Insert 2 papers. Layer two papers on top of each other.
    2. Cut the edge of one with a paper rip straight cut.
    3. Flatten the papers together
    4. Cut the text out of the flattened papers.
    5. To make a white outline, insert an outliner and make it your desired width and colour.

Assuming similar steps for PSE as well to get the torn affect?

    Photoless ok?

Thanks as well to @LynnG for the torn edge freebie...I’d be lost without it for sure.

Awesome challenge! I don't use alphas often, but gosh, they really add to a layout.
