Personalizing Dishtowels

Good Morning Lovely Scrappers,

Polly Liana here with a quick tutorial about personalizing dishtowels.  I have a dear friend who, because of a large family and lots of action in her kitchen, has considerable distress about cross-contamination of her dishtowels.  Her kids use both towels to wipe their hands and dry the dishes and it makes her a little crazy.  So she asked me if I would make her a simple set of towels with visuals that would help inform the user about which towel was which.  I love any chance to create personalized anything for my friends so I jumped at the idea.  Thought I’d take you along on the ride, too!  Here we go…

First, I purchased a set of white flour sack dishtowels from Target.  They come in sets of four and I like them because they don’t leave any fuzz on my dishes, they dry quickly and they are cotton so they can take a beating.  In this case, they’re also ideal because I decided to use iron-on vinyl and it does best on a smooth surface.  I ironed two of the towels, folded them in thirds and then in half and ironed again.  I then measured the resulting surface so I would know the size of the canvas with which I was working.

I then created a canvas in the Cricut Design Space that was the same size as the folded face of my towel.  I found two simple images of a hand and a dish and used the font “KB Planet Earth” to label them.

Because it’s iron-on vinyl, I flipped the image and sent it to my Cricut for cutting.  I decided to make the images teal and the words black.

When they had been cut, I peeled off the excess vinyl (called “weeding”) and prepared the surface to accept the transfer.

After ironing the front and back, I carefully peeled off the plastic transfer film to reveal the finished towels.

I hope these help her keep her cross-contamination to a minimum!
