Same Place, Different Time

Lately I’ve been intrigued by the concept of taking photographs of the same place, but at different times.

It started with the website “Dear Photograph“.  I discovered this website last year.  On this website, people submit photos of themselves holding an old photograph superimposed over the same location.  It is fascinating!  The submitters also write a caption for the photos and there are so many interesting stories there.  Here are a couple of examples from “Dear Photograph”, linked back to the source.

Then, I found some examples of people who took photos of the same place during different seasons.  What a great idea for a scrapbook page!  {All photos link back to the source.}

And then I found a guy named Eirik Solheim in Norway who took a photograph out his living room window every day for a year.   He made a video of them and it’s amazing!

For my birthday, my husband Todd gave me a book called “San Diego Past & Present”.

I was completely fascinated by this book.  I love looking at old photos as it were.  But every 2-page spread of this book is a comparison between old and new.  They put an old photo of the place on the left, and they take a current, more modern photo of the exact same place on the right!  Fascinating!  This is Mission Beach.

And this is Prospect Street in La Jolla.

All of these examples of taking photos of the same location at different times has inspired me to take a photo at the same place at four different times this year.  I will be taking photos in the courtyard at my work, where there are lots of trees to show the seasonal change.  I will be taking photos on March 20st (vernal equinox is today!), June 20st (summer solstice), September 22nd (autumn equinox), and December 21st (winter solstice).  I can’t wait to show you at the end of this year what the photos look like!
