I have many holiday themed kits i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc. As I take a lot of holiday photos, I get a lot of use out of my holiday themed kits but I get even more use out of them by using them in a non-traditional manner. It’s fun too to find new ways to use the product and who doesn’t like to get their money’s worth out of their scrappy products! Let me share with you more uses for holiday kits.
Often I hear people say they don’t like to purchase holiday themed kits as they don’t think they will have much use for them. I say, take a second look, you might be surprised how much might be in there that you can use and re-use over and over, and not just in the holiday themed fashion. Sometimes, recoloring a product or using only part of it can provide a whole new way to use it. Let me give you some examples by telling you what I’ve done with this fabulous kit by Allison Pennington “Holiday Hustle“.
At first glance, two things jump out at you from this kit…..lots of pink and lots of Christmas elements. While I love this kit for both of these reasons, I love it even more because it is actually a very versatile kit that can be used for so much more than just Christmas layouts. I started by choosing the kraft paper which is a lightly textured warm neutral that worked well with the mask and photo I wanted to use. Pink wasn’t going to work well with my page so I recolored a few elements in gold and white and for the fuzzy element I changed the tone of the blue/green to warmer green/yellow. I had changed the pompoms to white and placed a piece of it under a word art strip I cut up to use just the word “don’t”. Then I duplicated the pompoms and turned them upside down, placing the strip along the top of the layout. Then I duplicated that again and reversed the strip again, this time placing just a bit of it along the bottom of the layout. This is the finished layout I created using “Holiday Hustle”.
The next time you see a holiday kit, look a little closer, think of how you might recolor or resize elements, change the look of a paper pattern by blending papers together or try selecting only part of the product to use i.e. brushes, overlays, paint. I love the challenge of using product in multiple ways and hope I have inspired you to try it.
