We all make mistakes…
And I’m not talking about choosing the wrong paper, or scrapping the wrong picture, or even messing up the details of the memory…those are all pretty open to interpretation. Hardcore mistakes, though, are enough to make you think “Man, I wish I hadn’t done that!” I have a strict rule of not saving psd files, or usually even going back and making changes on a layout, so when I make a mistake, I have to live with it. These are the three biggest mistakes I usually make.
I don’t check the spelling. Of everything. – This has come back to burn me more times than I would like to admit, you know, being a teacher and all. Once, my wife noticed one of my layouts and said, “That’s nice Aaron.” I was so thankful that she had recognized the beauty of the layout I had created until I realized that she was referring to my glaring spelling error in the title. Yup, nothing says special memories like a layout titled “Remeber.”
I forget to add the date – I am so guilty of this one. I think that adding the date to a layout is so important for preserving the memories behind it, yet it’s one of the things I almost always forget. Sometimes I catch it before it’s too late, sometimes I don’t. I always regret it though. I remember one time, I did a layout, and as a last finishing touch, I added a tab to put the date on. By the time I realized I hadn’t actually put the date on the layout, I had already uploaded it to the gallery and deleted the psd files (nope, I don’t keep them!).
I forget to shadow all of the layers – Shadowing my layout is one of the last things I do. Often, when I go through and start shadowing, it’s super easy for me to skip over a layer, without really knowing it. I find myself have to give the layout one good look over to see if everything seems to be shadowed appropriately.
These are the three major things that I always seem to forget when I am finishing up a layout. In the end, these mistakes are all part of the process, part of the journey. Still, hopefully, I can help prevent you from making the same mistakes.
Do you make mistakes when you are scrapping a layout? What mistakes do you make over and over again?

Oh, yes! Once I spelled Pennsylvania wrong on the cover of a book. And guess where I live – Pennsylvania! I always have typos, even when I ask for help proof-reading. On another layout, I didn’t journal in the spot provided and forgot to delete the text layer. Luckily it pretty much blended into the paper and I was the only who noticed it.

Oh yes, spelling words and using the wrong words, like “passed” instead of “past”. But my biggest recent one – using a template and not noticing the “your story goes here your story goes here….” text box was still on the page. I found it once it was printed on a page in an album. Oh well.
