Snappin’ Sunday: 35mm vs. 50mm
I thought it might be interesting to contrast focal lengths this week. So many amateur photographers reach for our handy 50mm lens, but another popular wide-angle lens is the 35mm lens – especially for those cold months when most of our photos have to be taken within the confines our smaller houses. I actually own both lenses, and while I prefer the 50mm for portrait style pictures, the 35mm definitely comes in handy indoors. Here are a few examples of the different focal lengths. They were taken from the exact same spot and settings so you can see the difference.

Where I usually find my 35mm beneficial is inside. These two shots are both from the end of my daughter’s bed, but you’ll notice when I used my 50mm I could only capture her pillow.

One thing you do need to be careful of when using the 35mm lens is distortion. This shot was taken from a close angle slightly above my son’s head, and he clearly has a little bobble head action going on.

Similar shot here, but it was taken with my 50mm and there’s no distortion.

I love both these lens and use them almost exclusively: the 35mm for indoors and the 50mm for everywhere else.
