Vacation Project: Great Big Trip

Have you ever scheduled a once-in-a-lifetime vacation? We did. We are doing a crossing of the Panama Canal by cruise ship. And we are doing it with 21 family members total. And since it’s probably not something I’ll do again, I expect to take a zillion photos and feel completely overwhelmed when I return home. After all, there are a few Disney World vacations and that month of traveling that I still haven’t scrapped.

But, since we planned this cruise last spring, I’ve been thinking about how to make the memory recording part go easier. So, I have a plan, and hopefully, this plan will help someone else with a big event to scrap! I know at the end of this project, I will have a Great Big Trip Photobook, or two Photobooks!

Let’s start at the beginning. The trip hasn’t happened yet. I have been reading up on the Panama Canal, and I noticed that there are certain things I want to photograph. I’m making a list of those things so I remember to capture them. Also, on a previous cruise, I took photos of the elevator day sign, and I find that sign makes a fun divider in my book, so I want to capture those also.

Here’s a peek at my list so far:

  • The front of the ship going through the locks
  • The back of the ship showing the height difference.
  • The side of the ship showing how little space is left.
  • Each day sign, with feet of who is in the elevator with me.
  • The drinks I order (it’s always fun to share the non-alcoholic options!)
  • Photo of my husband and me
  • Photo of my kid and his cousin (This is an ongoing series because they keep track of who is taller)
  • Photo of my kid and his uncle (Also an ongoing series).

Of course, there will be photos that happen organically too. But because these are important to me, especially the series ones, I want to make sure I capture those.

The other thing I have planned, and where I’m keeping my photo list, is a little travel book. I don’t know about you, but I hate when I come home and try to remember why I took certain photos. Or what that person’s name was that was awesome. So, I have a little notebook to gather all those tiny moments and names and stories. It’s little, just 6×6 so I can carry it around with me on the trip.

How do you prepare for a big trip where you know you’ll make lots of memories?
