This week’s Trend Watch features beautiful products included in the category of ephemera.
Unlike wood grain or stitches, ephemera is a much broader, less defined category. In fact, there is some confusion about what ephemera really is! Here’s the good old Oxford definition:
- things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time.
- items of collectible memorabilia, typically written or printed ones, that were originally expected to have only short-term usefulness or popularity
In the scrapbooking community this includes cards, notes, tickets, stickers, posters and advertisements to name a few. Often, these items are vintage in nature although the trend includes more modern items as well. A good way to get a feel for items that would be included in this trend is to do an image search for ephemera. Go ahead, we’ll wait here for you…
… You’re back! Awesome. One of the great things about ephemera is that you can both buy it and create it yourself! Some of the best layouts include a mix of both personal items and professionally-created products. Check your “junk” drawer or the bottom of your handbag and you’re likely to find some of your own ephemera. Obviously, it lends itself very well to hybrid and Project Life because the physical items can be included easily, enhanced and supported with other tidbits. It’s also a great way to lend a “vintagey” feel to your pages. Using ephemera in your digital layouts is sure to make them pop right off the page.
We’re excited to see how YOU use ephemera on your pages! Do you have a special idea that you want to share? Hop over and participate in the Trend Watch – Ephemera weekly challenge in the forum for the chance at a $5 store coupon. If you need some ephemera products to get you started, remember the entire Trend Watch – Ephemera category is 20% off all week.
