SOSN: Same but Different!
Woo hoo! It’s Wednesday again! If you are relatively new to The Lilypad or digital scrapbooking, SOSN is a phrase you need to know.
Every Wednesday the designers hand pick a bunch of their digiscrapping goodies and put them on sale for half price! It’s a great way to build or grow your stash with everything from full kits to separate element and paper packs, alphas, templates and anything you could want on offer for a limited time. The Wednesday TLP newsletter is always worth a look to see what’s included in this weeks bargains. (If you aren’t already subscribed to get the newsletter, sign up here). Today’s Something Old, Something New store product category is here for you to check out. (If you are viewing this post on a different day, the link may not work, but each Wednesday, look for the 50% off Specials category!)
One of the other things about SOSN is it reminds me of kits I have in my stash and that each kit has so many possibilities. I often see something I might have missed the first time around in the store, or something that was buried and is new to me but I also love seeing what the Pollys and Designer Creative Team Members create and how there can be quite different looks and pages that come from the same kit. So that’s what this post is about, I’m looking at 2 kits available at 50% off for today only a bit closer and sharing some Same Kit, But Different Look layouts with you.
This week, Bella Gypsy’s My Person Collection caught my eye. I am a sucker for cute, punny and funny wordart phrases and Bella Gypsy never fails to make me smile. Their flower packs they adorably call ‘Frippery’ are a stash must-have and they always have a rainbow of fun patterns and a mix of artsy pieces. This collection has both separate bubble-wrap style paint elements in the Whatnots pack as well as pre-painted wooden backgrounds in an additional paper pack, which, if you’ve seen my Mixed Media Beginners series, can give you an instantly artsy look in no time at all, with no real effort or know-how!
So because I was sold on all the above, here’s an artsy-ish page from me with this kit. I used a template by Lynn Grieveson (Rip It Up is also on sale this SOSN) to give a torn look to some of the papers but everything else is from the My Person collection, which, as you can see, works for more than just people, or pets that we think of as people too, anyway). Along with the wordart and papers, the My Person speech bubbles, bubble wrap paint, flowers and cross stitched shapes (x’s) really directed this page composition. I cut down the washi taped polaroid frame to fit the template a bit better but hopefully you can’t tell!
Another little gang page, by Trish, but this time a lot more feminine palatte and with the pop of foliage and the vivid pinks, this looks so fresh, vibrant and Springy compared to my page. The way she’s framed the photos and funny wordarts with that Frippery is awesome! Running the ribbon and alpha brackets under the title was a great way to connect it to the photo cluster as well as make it stand out !
Less artsy, more traditional and making great use of that floral background is this page by mocamom. I love the combination of using the torn edge as well as the notebook edge from the IttyBits pack plus a scalloped piece. It makes me think of all the paper edge punches I used to use in paper scrapping, and all the Frippery goes so well with that multi-flower paper pattern.
Secondly this week, I’m looking at coordinating Tiptoe Elements and Papers by Allison Pennington. It obviously has a fresh Spring vibe and as always, Allison’s paper packs have a stack more papers than at first glance. Her Alternates folders that are included in the download links are always a bonus that can save some recolouring time and extend the kits possibilities in so many cool patterned designs! Pieces like the vellum cloud, index tab and tag also draw me in, and there are often handdrawn doodles and scribbles that I again appreciate from a Mixed Media Beginners point of view. (Having them included in a kit made them feel less intimidating to mix in with my ‘traditional’ scrapping style at first). And there’s always a good mix of fasteners and scattery bits, because it’s all about the details!
This page is by Polly Elisa aka EHStudios and it is quite a contrast to my page. That full page, pink based background paper with the extra yellow of the flowers and trim looks amazing. She has used parts of the coordinating journal card page within a template. The kraft clouds over and under the cluster of photos and punched out cards as well as the scribbles at the bottom right and splashes of white paint add to the fun vibe that the background instantly gives!
Following on, this page by KayTeaPea gives us another feminine but softer example of use of this kit using the vellum clouds this time and a split background, featuring a different pink based paper. The creased white background works well with the textured white dress fabric and the cute watering can charm placement adds to the portrait!
And just to show a still fresh but masculine side, this is a page I made previously using this kit ( as well as the coordinating journal card pack, some additional green based papers and stitching). Focusing on the blue toned papers, gingham ribbon pieces and flowers but with a few less obvious details like the dark scribble blended under the Twirl title label (that is from a journal card), messy pink stitching anchoring the lace and date tag, as well as the row of coloured brads underlining the ‘in the garden’ wordstrip.
Have you got these kits in your stash? Have you used them? Link me up to your page in the comments below, I’d love to see how you used them!
