This week’s installment of Polly Picks features white space master, Julie Barriball (mrs2a50). Julie is one of the original creative team members and a much-beloved Polly. Her distinctive pages nearly always feature her very special Weimaraners, Roxy and Aspen. Julie’s pages have a very crisp, clean design that allows her photos to shine. She typically starts with a neutral background paper and a white frame as the base for her pages. Julie has a love affair with ribbons and string, which she uses to add a pop of color to her beautiful layouts. Dip into an extensive digi flower stash, choose some word art for title work and you have Julie Barriball style! Shop Julie’s style at 20% off through September 30th.
Here’s Julie in her own words: “I live in eastern Washington and have been married for almost 20 years. After over 18 years as a paralegal, I switched focus and am now an executive assistant to the director of a Department of Energy scientific user facility at a national laboratory. My husband and I have two dogs, Roxy and Aspen, who are perfectly happy to play the roles of our “children” and who I think love to be the sole subjects of my photos these days. When I’m not scrapping, I enjoy cooking and reading, and hanging out in our newly renovated backyard. My “style” has always been focused on the photo without a lot of embellishments, but over time, I can definitely see how my style has evolved into the clean & simple, white space pages I create now. Even when I really go crazy with elements, they’re still quite clustered and leave a lot of white space on the page. I’ve struggled over the years with this style, because I’ve felt like I need to really “use” the majority of a kit on my page. But I think I’m finally okay with keeping it simple, and I know I’m a lot happier with my pages when I just let the page be what I want, without worrying if I’m using enough of the kit. I’ve been a Pollywog since TLP opened in 2007, and it’s been amazing to see the site evolve from just 4 designers with no forums and a limited gallery to what it is today. I consider The Lilypad to be my one and only digiscrap home and can’t imagine not being a part of this site!”
We can’t imagine The Lilypad without Julie either! Her pages have inspired so many of us with their eye-catching minimalist design. If you’ve been wanting to explore a more clean and simple aesthetic in your pages, perusing Julie’s gallery is a great place to look for ideas. She has a knack for choosing just the right elements to enhance her photos, both in color and placement. You’ll see how brilliant she is at creating a pleasing visual triangle on her layouts. Even when she adds more elements than usual, her pages are always balanced and thoughtful in their design. Let’s take a closer look:
