Polly Picks: Carolee Harris

This week’s featured Polly Picks are from our own dear Layout Team Lead, Carolee Harris.  One of the things that amazes us about Carolee’s gallery is her precision.  Her beautiful gallery showcases her purposeful use of every detail on her layout.  Each element, spray of paint, word art and photo is thoughtfully selected to complement each other and strengthen the entire piece.  When we look at her finished layouts, it’s clear that they are carefully and artistically crafted. Her layouts often feature templates, word art, journal cards and adorable photos. Here’s how Carolee describes her style: “I would describe my style as clean and deliberate, usually with a lot of color and some white space. I like to use patterned paper too. Most of all, I always try to focus on the story.”

Carolee’s gallery is an excellent place to go if you’re looking for great examples of ways to use templates and creative techniques of mixing and matching products from different kits.  She often anchors her elements in the center area of the page, using paint or tiny elements to balance at the edge to balance her centered compositions.  Carolee is a master at creating visual interest while still leaving a place for your eye to rest. Be sure to check out her titles– she’s a genius at creating eye-catching titles using mixed media too.

I’m a creative who pulls inspiration from all corners of life—both the joyful highs and the real-life moments that punch you in the gut. Honestly, I don’t think I can pin down a single scrapbooking style for myself, so let’s just go with eclectic. My layouts really depend on my mindset. If I’m in a deep, cerebral mood, you’ll likely see something chaotic and messy. If I’m more relaxed, it tends to come out clean, simple, and structured.

My brain is usually running on several channels at once, so it’s completely normal for me to be working on a digital layout, dabbling in a hybrid project, and getting messy with art journaling or mixed media—all at the same time.

Here are a few of my go-to tools: Digital: Adobe Photoshop CC + my MacBook; Photos: Canon Rebel or iPhone; Hybrid: Cricut Joy + sewing machine; Art Journaling: watercolors, stencils, and artsticks

And when it comes to embellishments—digital or physical—I’m always reaching for messy threads, ribbons, and Polaroids. Always the Polaroids.
