Behind the Design: Rachel Young Designs

Hi all!  Polly Jewelle here with another edition of Behind the Design.  With a little bit of pleading and maybe a few bribes we got the designers here at the LilyPad to agree to show off their design spaces at home.  They also agreed to answer a few questions about their design space that will allow us to get to know them better.  This month we are going behind the designs of

Mac or PC?
PC is my husband’s choice.  He built me a computer that is speedy quick, has a quiet fan, and most importantly has plenty of memory.  We’ve thought about going with a Mac, but honestly I don’t want to buy all new software… 😉

Coffee or tea (or both/neither)?
Being the mormony Mormon that I am, no coffee or tea…but plenty of hot cocoa and water with ice and lemon essential oil.  Mmmm!

Guilty pleasure snack while creating/scrapping?
Honestly, I don’t snack while I’m working.  I’ll take a break and grab a quick bite, but I can’t stand messy hands in general and a messy keyboard can send me right over the edge. 🙂

Favorite music to listen to?
This constantly changes for me.  Right now I’ve been listening to a LOT of Christmas music.  The Lower Lights Sing Noel has been my go to album for a few days now…for me it’s the perfect mix of calm and pep that keeps me going.

Your view from your scrap space?

Messy. That’s what it usually is! 🙂  I have four unruly  kids (ages 3-14), a handsome husband, a big hairy dog, and 7 chickens. (Not that the chickens are in the house.  I just didn’t want to have them feel left out!)  That makes for a LOT of cleaning/running around/fun and even if I’ve just picked up, it’s messy 5 minutes later unless everyone is gone (which hardly ever happens).  Since my work space is out in the “public” area of my house, it’s always on display and I can still be a part of everything going on while I get some work done.  Can you see? School folders, scriptures (from reading this morning), Legos, and even a shoe reflect my everyday real life.  We are certainly not a Better Homes and Garden’s home… 😉

What software do you use to create with?
Photoshop CS6 is what I use and I love it!

Favorite photo editing tools?

I LOVE the Photoshop actions from My Four Hens Photography.  I really feel like they can make anyone feel like a pro.

Favorite time to create (morning or evening)?
I try not to work while my kiddos are home.  That usually leaves a few hours during the day while Hugh (my baby) is at his school and the older kiddos are at their school to get some design work done.

Favorite thing about your workspace?
I love that my office space is right in the middle of everything in my house. I love that I can shut the cupboards of my computer hutch and put the craft supplies in my baskets.

Least favorite thing about your workspace?
Same as my favorite thing.  Is that weird?  😉  I would sometimes love to shut myself away and get to work when I have a deadline fast approaching.

What would you dream workspace look like and where would it be?
In a loft of a house surrounded by property in the Pacific Northwest.  That’s a dream of mine that I hope someday will be a reality.  It would be all my own and I would have cupboards, cubbies, and shelves to put all of my gear on!  Lots of white with unexpected pops of color….ahhhh…I can see it now! 🙂

Ready to see Rachel’s workspace?  She has given us quite the tour of her little area.  She even has described it in detail for us!  Get ready to be inspired by Rachel’s cozy nook!

I love how Rachel kept it real, don’t you?!  Who doesn’t have a few piles of things to get to lying around?  That nook of Rachel’s is really a great idea if you have little ones and you want to be with them while you work.  Oh and let’s not forget the absolute genius it is to have a cabinet that you can close the doors on and hide your creativity “mess”!

I hope you have enjoyed this little peek in Rachel’s workspace!  What was your favorite part of Rachel’s design space? Let us know in the comments!

Stay tuned next month for a peek into another designer’s space!
