Hello friends! Did you know that each month The Lilypad offers you a free template for your digital scrapbooking enjoyment? You can find the freebie in the monthly challenges section of the pad’s forums, and they are always awesome! I love using templates when I’m in a creative rut and I *really* love modifying them to make them a little more unique to my scrapbooking style. I tilt, rotate, enlarge, shrink, add and delete items on the template as desired to discover what will fit best with that I’m envisioning – I like to think of it as a creative puzzle that I play with to come up with a new look for my layout.
Sara Gleason designed the August template challenge freebie and it is such a great design! It is perfect as it, but I had a few photos I wanted to scrap so I decided to take this freebie and see how I could make it my own with really only a few changes.
This is the template from Sara:
This is how I modified it:
I did the following things, which was really quite simple and fast:
– deleted the horizontal light gray photo block & paint splatter
– extended the light blue paper, dark blue paper and dark yellow paper strip across the entire page
– selected the photo block, tan/olive paper, pink paper, and coral word strip box then copied and pasted these items twice
– aligned the copy and pasted items in a row so I now had three of each
– added my papers, elements and photos and moved things around until I was happy with my layout
This is what I ended up with once I added all of my papers, elements, and the photos I wanted to include:

I had so much fun taking the template and modifying it to fit my needs while still keeping to the vision of Sara’s design! I hope this inspires you to think out of the box with templates and modify them to suit your own design style and see that there can be so many new looks that you can get from a template. This August template is free for only a couple more days so be sure to get it and join in the August template challenge here at The Lilypad!
