October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. We here at The Lilypad would like to encourage all of our readers to take the time to schedule a mammogram. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), early detection of breast cancer has a 98% survival rate. Did you know that men are also affected by breast cancer? It is true. Men should perform self exams and report abnormalities or changes to their doctor immediately. Please visit the NBCF site for details on early detection.
The image above was creating using the gorgeous Storyteller October 2014 Collection from Just Jaimee. This topic is very near to my heart as it has been hovering over me for a couple of years. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2012. During her chemotherapy and radiation treatment it was determined that my sister carries a gene that significantly increases her chances of having cancer. She was advised by her Oncologist to contact her siblings to be tested for the same gene. This is what prompted me to be tested. The test is involved and takes months for results. During the wait time it was discovered that there were some areas for concern for me as well. Over the next several months I underwent many tests. Each test gave a result that prompted another test. The months spent not knowing was a struggle, but in the end I was cleared by my doctor and then finally told that I did not have the gene. More happy news: my sister is now cancer free. She follows up with her Oncologist on a regular basis and takes many other preventative measures to assure she is in good health.
