Happy Saturday, Michelle here today! When I found out today was National Coffee Day, I knew what I had to write about. I LOVE coffee, and no way could I pass up the perfect excuse for a blog post all about COFFEE! Sorry tea drinkers, today it’s all about the java.
Did you know coffee is a very old beverage? According to Wikipedia, legend has it that a sixth-century Ethiopian goat-herd, Kaldi, noticed the energizing effects when his flock ate berries from a certain bush, so he chewed some himself. His exhilaration prompted him to bring the berries to a monk in a nearby monastery. But the monk disapproved of their use and threw them into the fire. Of course, the beans smelled amazing as they roasted (I’m editorializing a bit here), so the other monks came out to investigate. They dug the beans out from the embers, ground them up, and dissolved the powder in hot water, yielding the world’s first cup of coffee.
The first credible record of coffee drinking comes from the Sufi monasteries of Yemen in the mid-fifteenth century. Coffee plants originated in the Kingdom of Kaffa in Ethiopia, also a possible origin of the name “coffee.”
Today, over 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed each year. It is a world commodity that is second only to oil. For more fascinating tidbits, check out the Wikipedia Coffee page.
