I was reading an article about Thanksgiving and side dishes, and it said dressing... I was confused at first, then remembered... aha, stuffing. :giggle

What do you and your family call it? Stuffing or dressing? Do you have a special recipe or kind you make?

I love stuffing, and always enjoy all kinds. I like the bread crumb base with fresh turkey gravy. I also like my moms sausage stuffing. It's different, and very tasty.

What about you? :hummm

It's stuffing for us, although I have to admit I don't like it. (*Hangs head in Thanksgiving shame*)

My husband doesn't like it either, Laura!

I loooooooooovvvveeee it! I call it stuffing, but my grandmother calls it dressing, so I've learned to understand either way. Perhaps it's one of those location things, similar to soda vs pop ;)

Ohhh I totally wonder if stuffing vs dressing is a regional thing! I am very interested in that linguistic project right now. Spin off thread coming! :)

I know many who don't like stuffing... aka dressing! We have some in my family that don't like mashed potatoes but prefer the roasted potatoes. We also have division on the veggie front too... brussels sprouts, green beans, or turnips. I will pass the turnips any day, ick! It was always at family Thanksgiving when I was a kid, and I detested it!

We call it stuffing thought my grandparents called it dressing (so I wonder is there a generational aspect too?). I've always heard it's "stuffing" if it's in the bird and "dressing" if it is not. But we call it "stuffing" even though we don't actually stuff the bird.

I call it dressing and it's my favorite dish to the whole meal. It's my aunts recipe and it's the reason I look forward to Thanksgiving.

Turkey And Dressing

1 Pkg Stuffing Cubes
-Or
1 Loaf bread -- torn up
1/2 Tsp Sage
1 can Chicken Brooth
salt and pepper -- to taste
-----Giblet Gravy----

If using whole turkey, wash inside well, then outside. Par dry, set aside.
If using turkey breast. Place in oven bag in 350' oven. Cook for about 2
hours. For dressing: combine bread or stuffing mix, with onion, celery.
Mix in eggs and chicken brooth. Season to taste with salt/pepper and sage.
If using whole turkey, stuff some off stuffing into neck and cavity. If
using turkey breast, place the dressing in a casserole. Bake at 350' for
about 45 minutes. Cook whole turkey according to pkg directions. Salt and
butter the outside before placing in oven. Baste often if not cooking in a
oven bag

For Giblet Gravy: Place giblets in water to cover, cook until done.
Remove; cut up. Return to brooth. Combine flour and water to thicken. Heat
till thickened.

Stuffing. For me its just what my family calls it who are originally all from BC, Canada-I'm the first generation born in NZ

I call it dressing. Well, the entirety of my family does.

What I understand is that dressing is made from cornbread and stuffing is made from white bread squares/cubes. The cornbread dressing we have uses the juice from the turkey, a pan of cornbread mashed up, minced onion and that's it. Although sometimes I've had it with celery and sage added, but meh, not my fave. Just like it plain, served with cranberry relish.

I always thought that stuffing was made in the turkey while it cooks. Dressing is made separate from the turkey. Either way, I don't like either of them. Mushy bread....bleh!

We call it stuffing around here and I don't really love it either. My MIL always makes it in the bird and she also uses the leftover bits that come in the bag of disgustingness inside the bird. Gag. It may be super tasty, but I can't get over the thought of what's in there. If I eat stuffing, it comes from a Stove Top box. Lol. We add that kind to our camping meals a lot of times because it's so easy to make.

we call it stuffing as well, I'm Canadian and my parents British. No homemade for us, we use the Uncle Ben's traditional sage and it is delicious. My SIL makes hers from scratch and none of us really like it but we always take a little to be polite, too much bread in it.

We call it stuffing and I always make two kinds. the cranberry/sausage/chestnut gang do not like bread stuffing and the bread based gang do not like the meat stuffing - so each end of the bird gets a different variety. And yes I stuff the bird before cooking - no one has died yet....

Stuffing here too, although if someone said dressing I wouldn't think anything of it. The two are completely interchangeable to me.

Funny how some it's one thing, and then others it's another. Just like Laura was saying in her other spin of thread! I like to hear what other people call things, and how much I think what I say is so popular, but sometimes its very regional!

I prefer the stuffing outside the bird. :) I have made both. I prefer the crunchy top with the softer underside of stuffing. In the bird is way too soggy for me.

But wait, stuffing is what goes inside the turkey right? And dressing is what goes on top of it? But what you seem to note are side dishes, as in dishes that actually go on the side?
I have never had a Thanksgiving dinner since I'm not American so the only things I know about it comes from tv and movies. But those words on itself make me not understand this thing at all... Languages are weird...

I call it stuffing and make my mom's recipe which is called dressing. We also use white bread. My husband never liked stuffing until he had my mom's because we crisp it in the oven so that way you don't have soggy bread. Oh and it has sausage in it too Jenn. Yum!

We use both names for it, though I think we call it stuffing a little more often. Mine is kinda' the highlight of our meal, and always the most popular leftover. I make it with cornbread & a bit of dried multi-grain bread, sausage, rice & either walnuts or pecans, along with lots of sage & little bit of onion & celery. A little bit goes into the bird, but most of it is done in the crockpot & basted with some pan drippings & a little of the broth from boiling those disgusting giblets - which none of us actually eat - I cook them just for the broth to use in my gravy & feed them to the animals.
