Jan. 16: Using Paint/Brushes as a Mask (Technique Challenge)

Love this technique and love that you can see the paint thru the photo.
Chicago Cubs game in 2014, with my sister, when they were celebrating 100 years. Used Kristen Aagard's Happy Birthday paint for the center paint and Sporty Baseball paint for the top and bottom. Combined the three for my mask. Kit used is Sporty Baseball. Glitterbet Alpha from Autumnal by Allison Pennington

What a great challenge!!! I always seem to shut the lid on my box so tightly, I can't think beyond it. Never thought of using a paint blob as a mask. My way of thinking is---this is a mask, use it as a mask, this is a paint blob, use it as an element on a page----DUHHHHH!!! Thanks for getting me out of that stuffy box!!!!!

Would like to clarify ... is it okay to use a template that already has the paintwork/mask in it and use that? If so there is actually a free template in the store that works well for this challenge.

I don't think that template works for the challenge unless you add your photo to the painted part. You have to use paint or something that isn't normally marketed as a mask as a mask. And then also put more paint on the page. So while that is an awesome painted template, in my opinion does not meet the requirements of the challenge.

Edited**** your sample layout meets the requirements of the challenge. The trees threw me off because I thought they were paint. I didn't look closely enough in your sample. So yes, as long as someone uses the paint part for a photo, that template works great. Must go have some coffee now because I clearly need it.

that is what she did ... she clipped her photo to the watercolor paint. i would say this would be acceptable ... it is watercolor paint and it was used as photo mask. but i'll see if we can get clarification.
 
this was a win win...I had this layout...sitting in my work in progress folder..just not getting the effect I wanted...and then I remembered Paula Kesselring's Crushed Gold fun (that I wanted so so bad and is now on my EHD) so I played with the WIP page and voila, thank you!

The paint in this template is a separate layer that could easily have a photo clipped to it, so would definitely meet the requirements of the challenge. The technique we are trying to showcase here is simply taking a paint layer and clipping your photo to it so that your photo mimics the shape and faded edges of a streak of paint. You can add additional paint if you want, but you don't have to.

If anyone still has questions, please post them so we can make sure you guys are clear on the instructions before you finish your page! :)
