This is a techique challenge. You must include at least one photo and one mask in your project. You do not need to take a new photo if you have an existing photo that matches the requirements for this challenge. You need to clip a photo in the mask or brush like you with any other mask.

Can you believe we are already halfway of the month. This is making January going sooo fast. But let me tell you something about my challenge for you...

I love using paint in my pages, sometimes a lot of paint sometime little less. But what i do like about paint and or brushes is that they are easy to use as masks as well. When there are paint clusters in a kit or maybe just a brush it happens a lot i use it as mask for my photos.

It is not hard to do so. Take photo you want to use and a brush or paint as you prefer. Layer it somewhere on your page and clip the photo inside, just like you do with any other mask.

You are free to use more paint brushes, but there must be at least 1 used as a clipping mask.

This is what i did for this challenge

and here are 2 older pages from me where i used the same technique, but also with a little extra tho show you more options with this technique:

Requirements:
1. Create a page with a photo clipped in a mask
2. You must include at least 1 paint/brush element as mask.
3. You must include at least 1 photo.

Other Software Programs:
If you do not use Photoshop here are some resources that I found for layer masks and r paint in other programs. If your program is not listed you can search your software's help for the words CLIPPING MASKS, etc. for specifics on your programs abilities. I just want you play around with your software to see what it can do. These are just random founded tutorials to show you what i expect you to do with the paint brushes.

Photoshop Elements
Paint Shop Pro
Gimp
Craft Artist
Pixelmator

Your page must be a new page in order to count for the Month of Challenges. Please post your page in your page thread you created in this forum. You should have one post per completed challenge page. If you complete all 31 challenges, your thread should contain 31 posts. Please do not comment in the participants’ page threads so we can keep them clean. You should also post your page here in this thread, and people can comment here if they wish. Pages should contain at least 75% current Lilypad product (currently for sale in the store from either permanent designers or guest designers.

This will be interesting. The tutorial for paint shop is not too helpful as it doesn't discuss paint at all. I am going to make a thread in Scrapping Pad for paint shop so we can compare notes.
the most tutorials are saying layer masks, because this is the same way i used the paint. i open the paint in my program and handle it the same way i do with layer mask.

I am excited to learn and try this new technique for me! Thank you for the challenge!

The layer that he shows that is the black scribbles would be equivalent to the paint or brush elements layer in Photoshop as far as I can tell. Can you use paint or brushes (or brush png's) in Paintshop Pro?

That doesn't translate for me. Are you just painting to use as the mask or what? I have to say that something like this where a different program doesn't even have similar functionality is appropriate for a tight challenge like MOC. Just saying...the tutorials I have found so far which isn't many are real helpful.
You're overthinking the word paint. You are not painting anything. The "paint" here is an element in a kit. You take something like one of these:

But instead of just putting it on your page like usual, you put it on your page and THEN clip a photo to it.

Yes and that is what I considered . Just the multiple colors in her example threw me. And are we customizing the paint to work with our picture or what.
Going to bed and maybe it will make more sense in the morning. Thank for the help.

you can turn and flip the paint if you want to make it fit more perfect. sometimes when there are little empty dots on the face i just paint on the paint layer to remove those dots to make the face nice and clear.

Sorry, if I misunderstand you, it's late here too! :-)
I'm not positive which example you mean? The one with the red background? Or the blue?

In the red, I think the paint she is demonstrating is just multiple colors to start with. But she uses the whole thing as a mask for her photo.
In the blue, the photo is masked to one layer, but Wendy added more paint to finish her page.

I guess the answer would be you don't have to customize the paint to your photo since you only have to have one paint/brush to complete the challenge and that would be covered with a photo.
But yes, if you added more paint that will show in the end, you might want to customize it to match your finished page.

See you in the morning! Sleep well.

WOW!!!! Thank you Wendy, this is amazing! I love paint and masks, and your pages of course!:clap

I love technique challenges!!!
Your first example really rocks!!! Hope I can come up with something :D

Edit: And here it is... tried to put some texture in it to make the paint look more 'real'... not sure if it's really the look I wanted, but is a nice start to try new things!

The multiple color paint on the red background is a paint cluster as is, a png element from a MPM add-on Magic.
I only use png paint for this technique.

Can't wait to start on this. The example pages are awesome. I love the cut outs with this technique :)

Great challenge. I do love the look this technique gives I don't know why I don't use it more often.

Would like to clarify ... is it okay to use a template that already has the paintwork/mask in it and use that? If so there is actually a free template in the store that works well for this challenge.
