I have a full head of hair even though it has been falling hugely since I was in my early 20s I think..so does Sarita.
We both color ours regularly and change hair cuts once in a while.....

I know many of you may have seen stuff like this but: a friend of a friend ours is coloring her child's hair...the girl is 5!!!!!!!!

I didn't let Sarita color her hair until she was 15.
She had some naturally done lights when we where in Brazil where some women do a rinse with lemon and some other stuff...there are some hair oils that will make your hair lighter if you wear it in the sun...but hair color? as in the stuff you buy in the stores?
no for a 14 or 15 (Sarita did it to go to an audition they were looking for a blonde, she had the base, was a strawberry blonde but used some bleach to get some more high-lights)

So, what do you think? what do you do to yours?
have you got any tips to look after semi long hair?
I (well Sarita too!!!) will welcome some ideas!!!!

I brighten up my blonde with highlights, but I do find that color dries my hair out somewhat, so I use "It's a 10 + Keratin spray" because I find it helps with the dryness and makes the color last longer.

Coloring a 5 year old's hair??!! Hmm I guess that seems really young to be exposing them to all of the chemicals. Unless they are maybe doing kool-aid type of color on the ends? I don't even let my 17 year old color her hair so I am probably a fuddy duddy about this stuff. LOL

I just chopped my hair for the first time in forever and I'm so glad I did!! It's so much fuller now and my daily routine was cut in half because it takes no time to blow dry.
I would never color my kids' hair. Laura, you're not the least bit a fuddy duddy. I don't let my kid have nail polish yet, either. There is plenty of time for her to grow up in a few years… ;)

Oh, my. I am not even sure what the color of my hair is anymore, but I can tell you that I spend enough to keep the grays under control! I have think wavy hair, which I passed down to my daughter - she hates it now, but as she ages she will grow to appreciate it, hahaha!

I think Emi was a senior when I let her color her hair the first time - it was pink, but honestly, it was gorgeous! She still wears it with shades of red/purple highlighted in.

I do blonde highlights every now and then. I really need a haircut now, but my hair is so straight and fine it just doesn't do much - I feel like I have never had a real "style". :(

My 11 year old has asked to color her hair, but I'm with you guys - I'm thinking maybe around 16.

I get my hair highlighted every few years just to blend in the gray. I have natural strawberry blonde hair that has beautiful highlights just from the sun so I don't have to do much. I have really long and really thick hair.

My boys have natural highlights in their hair too. Everyone always asks where we get their hair done....it's clippers and the sun!!! There is NO way I would ever pay to have my kids hair colored at their age...girl or boy!!!

Here are my boys from the weekend. I love their natural blonde highlights in the front!!

I stopped coloring my hair 4 years ago to see what color it had become naturally. It is so many different shades of gray I've had people think I've had it streaked. My girls didn't color their hair til late teen years; one went with a gothic purplish color and the other to cover early onset graying. I would never let a 5 year old color her hair as I think it's WAY to early to be thinking so much about appearance. Kids need to be thinking of learning and playing.

I promised myself that I'd never dye my hair as it turned gray. I figured I'm growing older and it's all part of the process. I had someone this summer comment about my platinum hair and how I got the top layer to look like it did (the hair below is much darker for some reason). He laughed when I told him that it was natural and the color that God blessed me with. Heh heh. Honestly, I just didn't ever want to get into the cost and management of coloring greying hair. Call me cheap and lazy.

A 5 year old? Never. Except for spray-on dyes for Halloween.

I color my hair... a red - it goes perfectly with my pale skin, and freckles. lol! My dad and grandmother, various aunts and cousins have red hair... so I match, LOL! My oldest son seems to get reddish highlights at times, but it is getting darker. I was hoping it would stay a bit more red than it is... he was really a lot more red as a toddler. My youngest has wonderful blondish/brown hair. It's so pretty. Both boys (of course, Murphy's Law) have wonderful highlights from the sun - I love it! Everyone always comments on their hair, it's so funny. They are boys, and don't care!

I think this is correct... but I heard recently of a story where the mother of a 5 year old colored her hair purple - the little girl cut her own hair, and then they tried to fix it. She was distraught that she would start school and everyone would think she was a boy. She asked to have purple hair. Her mom agreed - I think it was a wash in thing) and she was ready, happy and confident to start kindergarten.

It's not something I would do... but in special situation, there may be a reason for it.

Oh hair. What a fun topic. Both of my kids have dirty blonde-ish hair. Josh's is the lightest and has beautiful hi-lights. Isabelle's hair more two toned dark at the roots and really light on the ends, as if she needs a color touch up but her hair is not colored. Her hair was also very hard to manage when it was long, but since she had it cut short in January she has loved having it short and it is so cute and easy to manage. Her hair is full and curly. Very curly.
My hair is thin and straight and strawberry blonde with natural hi-lights as well. My hair is lighter during the summer months when I spend more time in the sun, and during the winter it darkens up to an auburn tone. I don't have the patience to color it, so I do have some greys that are starting to peek in here and there, but at the moment, I am embracing them.

All of that being said, I have a friend that has really thick and super curly hair. She chooses to straighten every single day. It looks amazing and I recently asked her about what product she uses and she mentioned the Wen hair care system. She loves the stuff and even uses it on her skin as a lotion. She swears by the stuff so we are going to give that a try soon too.

I totally want to try Wen... let me know how it goes Trista! I actually use Shampoo less, and more conditioned to keep my hair manageable. I straighten daily, too!

I have curly hair.. for the past 2 years I have chopped it of.. When it was long, I was losing a lot of hair. Got sick cleaning the house and seeing it all around the floor. LOL!!! Now it's short, easy to maintain. Save on shampoo (a bottle last me a month). I think you have seen it, I have coloured it blue, purple, blonde... :)
I workout nowadays, so I don't have dread shampooing it everyday. Feels so much lighter !!!

I disagree with colouring hair for a child so young.. the chemical is really strong.. :(

I think that's too young. I don't believe in hair color or nail polish until the teen years.

My son Brody is 7. He asked for blue hair when he was 5. So, I bought temporary spray color. He wore it on 4th of July. When he was 6, the whole soccer team wore blue hair for their big parade. All colors of skin with bright blue hair. My younger son has my red hair. It's kind of a dark strawberry blonde. As for care, I live by Garnier's damage eraser. I use the shampoo, conditioner, & anti-frizz oil. I also use Garnier hair dye every month to get my hair the color it used to be before the grey set in. I'm not yet 40, the grey really looks strange with my skin.

I'm another one to color my hair. Since I was 18 I started having this white streak right in the front along my forehead. I hate it, so I color it. I have super thick hair that I have thinned pretty much everytime I get a hair cut so it doesn't take so long to dry. I have been straightening my hair for the last year or two, so I only wash my hair every other day to cut down on the damage to my hair. The day I don't wash it, I still use a flat iron, but just really quick to fix the strays. I use two products (whichever one is on sale when I run out) to help with the damage from dry and flat ironing my hair and I love them both equally. They both smell amazing too!

Jenn - I'm much the same as your sons, my hair is naturally blond with reddish highlights too, all natural

I have mixed feelings about the kids question. I do not agree with parents who claim the ownership of their childrens appearence. Especially when we're talking teens and up. I think it's only fair for kids and teens to have their own say in these matters but I do think there is a line as to what is allowed at what age. Actual hair colouring, I think it's fair to say around 12 (which is around the age kids in my country switch schools which is a good rule-of-thumb I think). Being a teacher myself I think it's very disturbing when my 16 yo students aren't allowed to make their own decisions about things like cutting their hair or wear nail polish?!
And yes I colour my hair and so does my mom. When I was a teenager I sometimes had a colour-rinse which I think is the perfect middle ground for teens with parents who freak out about colouring because a colour-rinse will just be rinsed out after about 15 washes. Easy peasy, fun for everyone.

I color my hair, not because of gray (I actually wish I had gray, I'd quit coloring it lol), but just because I don't like my ugly brown color and think I look better with lighter hair. I've done it most of my adult life. I think I gave in and let my daughter color her hair when she was about 15. My oldest son, too...he was a teen when it was cool for guys to bleach the ends of their hair haha. My main reason for not wanting her to do it was the damage it does, especially bleaching which is what she wanted. Now that she is an adult, she colors it quite often. I have a hair appt tomorrow morning that is long over due!! Can't wait... I love the fresh out of the salon feeling!!

You should. I never thought I could carry off a short hairstyle ( face too round , hair too frizzy blah blah ) . Until I met a hairstylist who was willing to cut it for me ( imagine no one wanted to cut my hair short before that!! Eventhough I was willing to pay them .) I'm 41, if I don't try it now then when? Lol!!
