Eyes | Pad Patter 9.15.22

I was in 4th grade - age 9 when I started wearing glasses for near sightedness. I did wear contact for many years but once I needed bifocals, it was too much to handle. I have a spot on my macular so because wet & dry macular degeneration runs in my family, I get my eyes checked yearly. I also have the beginnings of cataracts in both eyes so I am waiting for when it is time to get the cataract surgery and do the lens replacement so I will not longer need glasses for distance and will buy the over the counter readers!

I have myopia and astigmatisms in both eyes. And as I age, presbyopia set in and is getting worse. I tend to have annual eye exams. Growing up I wore contacts (had to wear glasses as a school aged girl - but I didn't wear them). Contact prescriptions tended to be good for one year - requiring one to get annual eye exams in order to get new contacts.

My eyes have been dynamic over the years - constantly getting worse and worse (increased prescription). I am very due now to increase the reader strength of my bifocals.

I always joke that if we were still in the hunter-gatherer age, I would have to be the medicine woman and have people bring me food. Other wise I'd starve to death. There is no way I could see food to hunt or gather. I am loss without corrective lenses.
I would hunt and gather for you Lisa. ;)
My daughter’s eyes were getting worse at a very quick rate when she was little but thankfully the change is more minimal now.

Good job getting your eyes checked regularly Christa. I hope surgery goes well when the time comes.

I had no idea how much glasses cost until my daughter needed them. They can be so expensive!

And if you can believe it, compared to when I was growing up that is cheap for me. Growing up due to my prescription and the fact they were made in Australia it wasn’t uncommon to pay $600-900 per set. To make matters worse is because my face/nose was changing due to surgeries every few years there was always a chance that even if I wasn’t “due” for new glasses for visual reasons, they would no longer fit so I’d need new glasses anyway.

That’s crazy costs Jennifer!

Do you have your eyes checked regularly? Yes, although I've gotten off track with that since the pandemic. We try to rotate who gets an appointment as all four of us wear vision correction glasses. It's so expensive!

Do you wear glasses or contacts? I wear glasses. I tried contacts but my eyes would get bloodshot and I'd look like an alcoholic. I just prefer glasses.

How old were you when you started wearing them? I was 33 when I started wearing glasses.

It's funny that you posted this . . . Daniel just got his new glasses on Friday. We had actually picked them up, but they were giving off a purplish pink hue. Turns out the blue light protection on the lenses (that he and his dad chose) do that. I had to have them order new lenses without that. I don't know why they didn't tell my hubby that his 17 y/o was going to have purple lenses. LOL

Bloodshot eyes and purple lenses are totally in right now Cheryl. Didn’t you know?! ;)

I see both an optometrist and ophthalmologist on a pretty regular basis. I have a degenerative, genetic eye disease that has require one cornea transplant and will need another. Due to those, I also ended up with cataracts - one of which I have had done. I always tell people I have one seeing eye. The other is just along for the ride until I get surgery done. In fact, I have been off my computer for almost a week as i got a very large corneal abrasion in my seeing eye. I still can't see very well but it's starting to improve.

I wear glasses and have since about age 10ish. They do help some but not entirely. I wore contacts for awhile back when they decided that was the best current treatment for my eyes. Now I'm back to eyeglasses and progressives so they are very expensive. Fortunately, I have a sister who works for an optometrist and can get me her family discount!

Do you have your eyes checked regularly? Yep

Do you wear glasses or contacts? Yep! I have prescription reading glasses and glasses for nearsighedness.

I had lasix when I was 43. About 2 years later I started wearing store bought readers. I had to get my Rx reading and nearsighedness glasses when I was 58 and also had the beginning of cataracts and now I am 64. I have an astigmatism, floaters and severe dry eye which i had surgery for (didn't work). Now I can't see far away and wear my glasses but it really doesn't help a whole lot. My reading glasses aren't right but there is nothing I can do until I have cataract surgery. I have trouble reading my phone, but my computer vision is fine. I barely read newspapers, magazines. I can use my kindle because I can make the print bigger. It sure is a pain now! Old age can be a bummer!

Yay for a family discount! Sorry about the recent corneal abrasion.

It sounds like you and your eyes have been through a lot! I’m glad your Kindle allows you to enjoy reading still; I worry about when my eyes won’t allow me to drive, read or scrap any more.

I’m sorry you had to go back to glasses after lasik; that must be a pain!
I want to see a picture of little you with glasses now. :) I bet you were adorable in them!

How about this layout. :giggle

I feel for you since I've got some of the same issues. When I worked I would get floaters and had chronic dry eye. Restasis was recommended but I couldn't afford the prescription. The eye doctor recommended some OTC eye drops that helped. I also found out that EFA (Essential Fatty Acids) could possibly help. I already took some but upped the amount I took every day. I was on the computer 8 hours a day at work then several more hours in the evening. The fluorescent lights at work didn't help and I quite often had ocular migraines with the floaters (even losing vision at times).

Once I retired, most of my issues were less frequent. I'm not on the computer as much and there is no fluorescent lighting by my computer at home. I've been able to cut back on the EFA's and eye drops only needing the drops when my eyes get extremely tired or allergies bother me. The one issue I still have when on the computer is when I'm on a webpage that has a lot of moving images (gifs etc) on it. I get ocular migraines from all the movement and even lose vision at times. The vision will come back but in the past it has lasted as long as 15 minutes. Not fun...

I also don't use my phone for any internet usage, only phone calls and texts because it is just too hard to read. I bought a lighted hand-held magnifying glass so I could read directions on bottles and extremely small print. I don't even like going on the internet with my tablet. It is more or less just for emergencies when the power is out. Power tends to go out during tornado warnings so I have the weather app to know what is going on. And, I very rarely use my laptop either. I much prefer my dual large monitors for computer usage, especially scrapping!

I can’t imagine how scary it is to lose your vision at times. I’m glad you know what to do to avoid that.

I'm pretty much blind as a bat without correction so I see the eye doctor once/year to update my prescription and order new contact lenses. I looked into Lasik but they advised me that I'm really too nearsighted for that to be a good idea, so now I have to wait until I'm old enough for cataract surgery. :D In the meantime, I had a vitreal detachment last year so I have a LOT of annoying floaters in one eye.

I didn’t realize Lasik isn’t fine for everyone. Good to know!
