It’s no secret that this time of year is always a busy one for me. As an elementary school Assistant Principal, there is a lot that goes into the first few weeks of school. On top of readying my own children to return to school, this can get a bit overwhelming. What often happens is for a few weeks, I disappear from the scrap world. I don’t open my computer at night, and I fall behind on my Polly responsibilities. This year, I am determined to avoid that trap. Here are three things I am doing to help find balance between devoting my whole life to school and ignoring my favorite hobby.
- To Do list is a must – This year I am currently working on putting together a good system for me that includes my calendar and schedule, notes, and a master to do list. Right now, the master to do list lives in my Moleskine notebook (although it may move to an app soon) and I choose items from that list to incorporate with my schedule in my Get To Work Book. The bottom line is, without a list, it is easy to avoid those tasks that take too much energy or ones that I don’t feel like doing.
- Schedule time – I am trying to block out time in my calendar specifically for scrapping. I look at what my responsibilities are for that day, what time I have available, and what I need to have ready for the rest of the week, and plan 1 hour blocks in my schedule for scrapping.
- Know and accept my responsibilities and limits – There are some things that I have to do. For example, if I have a meeting at 8am, I need to spend some time the night before prepping for it. I also know that without my creative outlet I am likely no good to anyone. I am trying to get better at saying “this absolutely needs to get done, but that I can do tomorrow and use the time to scrap tonight.” This is 100% a work in progress.
I believe that if I stay true to these three goals, I will be able to find a better balance between my two worlds. What do you do to find balance?
