When two people get married they bring in the traditions of their family. Then they merge their own and pass it on to their kids. This is pure fun of holidays. Traditions are called that because they are done over and over! Here are a few fun and meaningful old-fashioned Christmas traditions that are long overdue for a comeback.
Caroling! You don’t need a huge amount of people (but the more the merrier) to go to a house and sing a few Christmas Carols. Hark the Herald, and Away in the Manger, and end it with We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Smile and wave and know you made a complete strangers evening.
Stories! Christmas stories, from books, Audible or about your own traditions growing up. Snuggling up on the couch with your kids, love of your life and or your pet! Opening a story like The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen or The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry can cause the wonder of Christmas to bloom.
Homemade Cookies! You can go all crazy and make it from scratch or make it easy and get the open and cut and put in the oven. I am all for buying them already cooked in pretty boxes and lighting a baked cookies candle too! The fun is worth it and you are making memories and traditions.
Garland. One you make. I found this nifty DIY instructions. Long ago, our family sat and made a garland that took hours. We all had the needle, dental floss and bowls of patience. Helpful hint: If you have a dog that loves popcorn, make sure the garland is away from the dog. Yep, our dog ate all our garland. We still had fun. The story of the garland lives on in every Christmas.
Photos. Christmas card photos all dressed up are a great memory to hold. Taking hilarious photos, with garland all around you, baking or eating the cookies you got, and caroling through your neighborhood.
No matter your traditions, remember to find why you celebrate this Christmas season.
