Meet the Designer: Emily Merritt

It’s no secret that The Lilypad has some of the best designers around! Not only are they crazy talented, but they’re fun and sweet and kind and amazing individuals as well!  It’s always fun to take a minute to get to know the person behind the incredible designs that we see and use every day. Today, let’s take a few minutes to get to know Emily Merritt.  Here’s what Emily has to say…

Hey! I’m Emily and I live in small town Idaho…where there are more cows than people. My husband works as a graphic designer at a dairy magazine…so with both of us being artists we love to bounce ideas off each other. We have three beautiful children…ages 6 1/2, 4 1/2 and 2. They definitely keep me busy…but they are the light in my life for sure!

I love to scrapbook and design, of course…but taking pictures of people is my other business. I also love to cook, sew, build things with wood and I love to basically do anything that I can create!

I love to read and my favorite book is The Help…that’s also my favorite movie, as of late! My favorite TV show is Everybody Loves Raymond…in fact if I’m ever watching TV, that’s the show I’m watching. I love to snack on pita chips and roasted garlic hummus, or anything with peanut butter. I have also taken up a passion for running…and I actually find it enjoyable although I never thought I would say that!

As a scrapper, one of the things I love most about Emily’s designs is their versatility. Kits like Three Little Monsters…

… definitely have the versatility to be used for scrapping boy or girl pages! Emily’s designs are full of bright bold colors and fun unique style.

One of my favorite alpha sets (and I’m an alpha girl) can be found in Emily’s shop as well.  Her Tall Drink of Water and Whale of a Tale alphas are bursting with that doodly uniqueness that makes Emily’s designs stand out!

I’m a creative who pulls inspiration from all corners of life—both the joyful highs and the real-life moments that punch you in the gut. Honestly, I don’t think I can pin down a single scrapbooking style for myself, so let’s just go with eclectic. My layouts really depend on my mindset. If I’m in a deep, cerebral mood, you’ll likely see something chaotic and messy. If I’m more relaxed, it tends to come out clean, simple, and structured.

My brain is usually running on several channels at once, so it’s completely normal for me to be working on a digital layout, dabbling in a hybrid project, and getting messy with art journaling or mixed media—all at the same time.

Here are a few of my go-to tools: Digital: Adobe Photoshop CC + my MacBook; Photos: Canon Rebel or iPhone; Hybrid: Cricut Joy + sewing machine; Art Journaling: watercolors, stencils, and artsticks

And when it comes to embellishments—digital or physical—I’m always reaching for messy threads, ribbons, and Polaroids. Always the Polaroids.
