Member Spotlight
Hey all, Polly Jewelle here! I am excited to bring you another TLP member spotlight! I had the opportunity to chat with rfeewjlj this week. Jen is such a busy scrappper! I love seeing her layouts pop up in the gallery. Have you seen them?! You really should pop over and look at her inspiring gallery.! Enough of my rambling, lets sit back and take some time to get to know rfeewjlj a little better!
Jewelle: What is your IRL name and your user name?
rfeewjlj: My name is Jen Juris and my user name is rfeewjlj. There’s a funny story to that, too! When I was a freshman in college (this is going to AGE me), AOL online chat was all the rage and my friends Mark and Tim were helping me set up an account so I could chat. They gave me the username RFEEW and I couldn’t figure out what it stood for so they explained what it was. Both Mark and Tim are from Oregon and we were all going to the University of North Dakota. I am from the state of North Dakota but neither of them had ever been there before and all they knew about the place was the long, very cold winters. So they joked that the only girls at the college would be Raw Fish Eating Eskimo Women. LOL It’s so silly now but it stuck and I’ve used it ever since. For needed length, my initials were tagged to the end of it but I did make a layout about it awhile back. You can see it here.
Jewelle: Could you provide a picture of yourself so we can see who you are?
Jewelle: Where do you call home?
rfeewjlj: My husband and I currently live in the middle of Yakima Valley in WA state. We’re in a small town located in South Central WA and this is the first place I’ve lived where the seasons so closely match the seasons on the calendar. After living in ND for nearly 25 years where it’s more winter than anything else and then living in St. Louis, MO where it’s more summer than anything else, it’s so nice to have a good blend of all four seasons.
J: Digital or Hybrid? Both?
R: I am nearly 100% Digital. The closest to hybrid I get is making cards and printing them. I do think having a cutting machine and dabbling more in hybrid someday could be fun but for now, I’m totally in love with digital.
J: How long have you been scrapping?
R: I’ve been digitally scrapping since Feb of 2012 and I love it! When I was a kid, my mom was big into Stamping Up and Creative Memories and we would help her make cards, scrapbook pages, etc. It was something I was always drawn to and really enjoyed doing but after college we just didn’t have the money to keep up with all the supplies, etc. We also lived in a small apartment so dragging out all the stuff to make a few pages was always such a chore. I love digital because I can go back in and fix my mistakes, I don’t have to haul out my pictures, papers, and other supplies just to make a page, and I can do it from the luxury of my comfy couch!
J: What is the starting point for your pages – photos, the story, products?
R: I’d say about 85% of the time my pages are inspired by products. I love to take my favorite parts of a kit and use them to complete the story my photos are trying to tell. The rest of the time it’s usually a photo(s) that begins my page. But I’m also a big fan of challenges, especially scrap lifts! There’s something so fun for me in looking at other people’s art and then letting it inspire me to create a page of my own.
J: How would you describe your style?
R: Um, it can be all over the place but it tends to be somewhere between pretty clusters and clean and simple.
J: Any must-have items or techniques on all of your pages?
R: Not really. I am usually having to eliminate things from my page because I’m always wanting to include all the cool papers and elements I can.
J: Share a favorite tip or trick.
R: I’m a big fan of using keyboard shortcuts since I use my laptop and built in track mousepad to scrap.
J: Do you listen to music while you scrap? What kind?
R: I usually like it to be nice and quiet but if I do listen to music, it’s usually a mix of different Christian bands that I like.
J: What’s your favorite snack (if any) while you scrap?
R: I don’t like to eat when I’m scrapping but you can often find me enjoying a warm almond milk vanilla steamer while I scrap during the winter months.
J: What time of day do you feel most creative?
R: It really just depends on the day but usually mid afternoon is when I like to scrap.
J: Share with me the top 3 layouts that you’ve created.
R: I hope it’s ok but I’m going to include 4!
R: This is a favorite of mine because it shows a few things about me and my style. I like to often have lots of white space, I like to play with photos and photo treatments and blending modes, and I love a bit of vintage and soft girly things mixed with rustic charm.
R: This one was so much fun for me to make. It was the March scrap lift challenge and we had the option to lift from a paper gallery. I found it so fun trying to recreate the shapes and shadows and yet give it my own spin.
R: I love this page because it captures one of my two fur babies (Sadie) so well! She is a dog that LOVES to play outside and her face here shows that joy so well!
R: I had to include a page about my other fur baby, Penny, because I just couldn’t leave her out. I also love this page because it shows my love for funny or quirky pages! It’s always great to tell a story that makes other people smile or laugh!
Thank you Jen for letting us learn more about you!
