What do you call a group of two or more people? you all, yous, youse, you lot, you guys, you 'uns, yins, y'all or (just plain) you?

This is a spin off prompted by the stuffing/dressing thread that Kristina started. I am so fascinated by the regional dialect thing. My oldest daughter is in AP Human Geography right now, which studies people as anthropological groups instead of by national/state boundaries. She recently had to recruit a bunch of people to take the New York Times quiz that can determine where you live based upon certain words you use. For example, SODA or POP.....KITTY CORNER or CATTY WHOMPUS, etc. I took the quiz for her and it literally pin pointed my exact city of residence. Pretty freaky, nerdy cool! Give it a try and report back!

I guess I never really thought about it! When I'm typing, I suppose I just say "you" but I will admit when I speak I probably say y'all more than I care to admit. Which is strange, since I've never even been to the south, let alone lived there!

You do say that! I am firmly in the YOU GUYS camp, which I never paid much attention to until I took that test but am now feeling self conscious about. LOL

Okay, that's scary. It came up with all three major cities in my home state.

I think I'm an odd amalgamation of our various homesites. I tend to absorb some regional differences in lexicon it seems. So I sometimes say "you all" or "y'all" but mostly I say "you" or "you guys". Or I'll say either "lightning bug" or "firefly", "soda" or "pop" even though I grew up saying "pop" exclusively. But the roots of my language development are rooted more in the north midwest according to the quiz. So interesting!

LOL! I love that you know that :) WTH is a peenie wallie? And I wish we had drive through liquor stores. Just sayin ...

I'm firmly in the "you" camp. I did the quiz even though I'm not American and I'd say the fact I got places in Southern California makes total sense.

I even heard in your voice. :heartslub

So, a pennie wallie is one of the obscure dialect versions of lightning bug/firefly

And drive through liquor stores - aka the brew thru - pretty regional too. When my husband took it, his response was, "I have no word for that" because they really didn't have them where he grew up.

That's pretty interesting too! I wondered how some of my friends abroad might align on this test.

Yeah, never heard of pennie wallie. And I had to do the whole "I don't have a word for that" on the drive through liquor store. It's a brilliant concept!

It said I was from Reno (Nevada), Stockton or Modesto (California). I did live in an area just south of Fresno, CA for a few years. But beyond that, I've been in Arizona my whole life. :/

Never heard of pennie wallie either. And I don't think I had this question about drive through liquor stores. I call them drive thru liquor stores..... and idiotic :giggle

I had to go back and do the test a few times to find the peenie wallie reference, and each time I had at least one new question. But they all showed the same results.

I am about to take the quiz, but I am a "y'all gal" from head to toe. :giggle

Drive-thru liquor stores... all around in these parts. I have personally never driven through one myself. I guess I was never in such a rush for alcohol that I couldn't get out and go in to purchase. :rofl

I say y'all. Without a doubt. All the time. LOL

And this was scary. I live in Pensacola, Florida, and it pinpointed me to Mobile, which is about an hour away. It's also gave me Montgomery, Alabama and Columbus, Georgia . . . fairly close to me as well.

I think this is so interesting!

Awe man! The map wouldn't load for me. :'(

There were several questions that I was torn on what to put because more than one option applied.

"Sorry, an error has occurred." That's an awfully long quiz to not get a result on. :(

Like Trista, I had a problem with choosing one answer a lot. I talk a little bit Southern, a little bit Minnesotan, and a little bit "other stuff". And I prefer not to take a side on how to refer to carbonated beverages, and just refer to the exact brand of drink(s) in question. Anything else leads to argument. :P

You guys....I do like to squeeze a ya'll in here or there just because I like the way it sounds.

I refer to a guys as you guys. Never even thought about it. I'll have to take that quiz later. Sounds interesting.
