Really over this. I leant two books (approx $250-300 value) in March or April last year to a classmate. I assumed I'd get them back at the end of the semester (June), I've asked multiple times between May 2015 and now through FB messenger (thats my only contact) and been given answers ranging from yes I've still got them and I'll get them to you soon to I'm overseas and will return them when I'm back. I have found out that another classmate loaned a book as well to the same person and is still waiting for its return as well. I'm not sure what to do as I'd like them back as I may need them as resources next semester.

Pretty rude... I know it's unpleasant, but have you stated specifically that you need them? Or ask for replacements by a certain time? I suppose you could try that.

Ugh. That is terrible. I hate when people do that. So sorry you're dealing with that. I'm no good. I'm not forceful enough.

I think Kristina is into something. Be more about I need these books by because I need to use them in my next class or whatever is the reason. Ask them if they are oversees, who has her possessions right now. Offer to contact this person yourself to just solve the missing book thing.

I figure if I loan something out, I'll never get it back. I've lost friendships over retrieving borrowed items, so I just don't do it anymore. I'm so sorry about this. I agree to be very proactive, because it's the only thing that has worked for me when I needed something back.

^^this is what I wondered. If this person has a roommate, perhaps you can say "Please let your roommate/spouse/parent/etc know that I'll be getting in contact with them so I can get the books back by XX date." It stinks this happened. :(

I've posted on her FB page but am pretty sure I'll be going to the disputes tribunal over it. I know she is back cause she is part of a public advisory board and she attended the April meeting. I've already tried the I need it for school thing in Feb (I actually don't need it til July but thought that might have got action). I've definitely learnt my lesson thats for sure on loaning stuff.

That is such a shame...I hope it resolves for you and you get your property back. Hard lesson learned. :(

Its too bad that it is so hard to know who to trust. I would agree with the direct approach- I'd like to pick up some books I lent you - I'll be by on "dates", at "time", please make sure to have them available so I do not have to take alternative actions...

well it's still a wait and see thing but I did talk to her on Facebook yesterday and said I would be in town this weekend, she's not so I said to her please courier them to me and gave my address. I do not at all feel bad that it's going to cost her money to send them to me cause she had months to return them when I lived in the same city

Hopefully that will work and you'll finally get your things back.

oh wow, that is really rude. hope you get them back ... at least it sounds like this isn't a friend so no worries over ruining the friendship. i would try to push to have her drop them off where you used to live (when she is back in town) and then when you visit again you can pick them up?

Wow. That would make me upset too! Books are expensive! I hope you get them back soon, Jennifer!

That is so frustrating! Too bad this person wasn't responsible enough to return them to you in a timely manner.

No, no friendships ruined with this, she was only ever a classmate/acquaintance really.

I did consider getting them sent to my mum but she works shift work and the newest neighbours and/or their associates stole stuff from our property not that long ago so at least I feel like I'd get them sooner by getting her to send them to me.

@littlekiwi I hope you get the books back asap, and may I suggest that your mom (if she can) have packages delivered to her work instead of home? I had to do that when packages were marked as "out for delivery" but never made it to our house. I had items sent to DH's work. It took an extra day to get stuff cuz it had to go through internal mail system but at least I got my stuff!

It's sad that this will probably make you very wary of lending things again. I never lend things unless it's to family, or it's something I don't want back!

Unfortunately she works in hospitality so not an option.

it has made me very wary of lending to anyone but family and close friends. I am almost too nice in a way.
