And I know you do even if you have to take them out and put them in a glass!

But seriously, sort of, when I've watched a bunch of British shows recently, I've seen someone brushing his or her teeth. Now when the person finally takes the foamy toothbrush out of his/her mouth, they put the brush away as is and walk away. With all the toothpaste stuff still in their mouth!

Anyone I've ever had the occasion to be with while tooth brushing rinses the brush and also rinses the toothpaste foam out of their mouth. I do.

Is this just an American vs European difference?

I rinse both thoroughly, I can't have leave any toothpaste at all in my mouth. I've seen it occasionally on TV too, like you said.

i too rinse both.. now maureen @cookingmylife i will have to keep an eye out as we watch a lot of british tv too. i haven't noticed that but maybe because we watch come dine with me or a few others of those. that is too funny though. you will have me looking from now on for all tv shows that reflect people brushing!

They probably just don't want to take the time to show all the rinsing because it's not important to the plot.

@michelepixels Ummm.. if they show a full conversation while brushing a few seconds later doesn't matter because the character is still talking. I'm thinking it's more like when the British wash dishes by hand they put the straight from the soapy water dish right into the drainer. Admittedly, the dishes are almost always dried quickly and put away but they don't get rinsed before the drainer. This is from years of personal experience in the UK.

I don't rinse, I just spit. That seems to do the job. But I most definitely rinse my toothbrush, although if I do a good job brushing (and for long enough), then there isn't much toothpaste/foam left on there when I'm done.

I probably rinse other than just spitting because the next thing to come immediately is a glass of iced tea or coffee each morning. "Yes, I'll have a shot of Crest with that iced coffee please."

I am a crest girl too :)

I rinse mine and dry it too and wrap it in a clean Kleenex every time I use it. We watch a lot of British TV so I'll have to be on the lookout. Haha

I don't rinse and reasoning backed up here https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/how-to-keep-your-teeth-clean/

Don't rinse with water straight after toothbrushing
After brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste. Don't rinse your mouth immediately after brushing, as it will wash away the concentrated fluoride in the remaining toothpaste, thus diluting it and reducing its preventative effects.

I spit and rinse, both my mouth and the brush, but my son does not unless I specifically tell him to go back and do it. I'm always like, ewww how do you just walk off with the foamy stuff still in your mouth lol. But that article is super interesting @fruitysuet!

Thanks @fruitysuet I can see that point if there's no fluoride in your water. In addition to all our popular toothpastes, we have added fluoride in our water.

It's not a British/European thing, just personal choice.

I'm British and almost everyone I am aware of rinses, my husband doesn't though, he was advised by his dentist not to when he had a slight issue with his teeth and he hasn't rinsed since. He still spits though, doesn't swallow/ walk around with the foam in his mouth.

Don't know anyone that doesn't at least rinse the brush though.. Like others have said I think it's just not necessary to show on tv shows.

I brush and rinse both my mouth and the toothbrush. European here and I do not know anyone personally who doesn't rinse.

I actually used to have a special toothpaste that I had to use after brushing my teeth at night. I had to put it on my teeth, let it sit for a few minutes and then I could sparsely rinse. I thought it was disgusting and I didn't experience a difference. But it probably did help.

That is so interesting! I looked it up and they have tried it in my country (the Netherlands) back in the day. However there was unease over the health impact of fluoride and court ruled there was no legal basis for fluoridation. They tried to make it legal but there were not enough people backing it up and there now actually is a rule that basically says official parties cannot push body-altering things onto us without our consent.
Aside from that we do not have chloride in our water either. Yay! (I just cannot drink water that has chloride taste and smell, I cannot understand anyone can tbh (unless in desperate situations and no other options obvs)).

What an interesting conversation... but yeah, I have to rinse my mouth and my toothbrush. I can't even think about not rinsing... especially my mouth. Ew! Lol!
