Watch your kiddos and hug them tight...

I have a 2.5 year old girl and I'm sick to my stomach hearing this. Powerful thoughts sent her way. :(

better yet, this is why every child should be in the water as early as they can be (like in the months-old age range) so they can get comfy in the water and have a healthy fear of it! even more importantly, though, is that your kids actually learn how to swim. this does not mean they need to know how to swim a 100 butterfly or even swim a 25 of anything. it means that every child should know how to make it either from one place to another place in a body of water or at least turn over onto their back and float for a short time, regardless of the depth of the water. yes, even at 2, they CAN learn how to do this!!

my PSA (and i rarely have these and you can flame me all you want) - don't cripple your children by NOT allowing them to learn this basic life skill. tragically, this is an extremely sad example (if there are no other factors involved) of WHY kids need to learn.

AND, such a sad reminder for all of us to watch our kids around water every second, and also for us and them to know limitations. the risk is so great.

poor momma. prayers for she and her baby.

Oh goodness. :( My heart just aches reading this. I pray that she will be well and for her momma.

(also, agree Amy. Swimming and water confidence is really an important life skill.)

Oh the big two know how and have for years and Bella's learning. (My mom has a pool) I'm just uber-paranoid since I drowned twice around Bella's age and grew up hearing about it. Once in the bath and once in the pool. Had to have cpr and go to the hospital.

How terrible :( I will be thinking of that family. Makes you realize how precious life really is.

That' awful! Working in healthcare, I see things like this (not at the pool but the aftermaths) and I still can't get used to it when children are involved... I hope she's okay.

Yes, I totally agree Amy!!! I will say though that that doesn't prevent drowning always, there are situations beyond our control, like rip tides, and other accidents that unfortunately happen and I have lost a friend who definitely knew how to swim and had water confidence, accidents still do happen... and as a kid i almost drowned once and I was an awesome swimmer and it was a situation out of my control and i still have anxieties about it and why i will never do a tri-athlon... which reminds me that there is an awesome article about how drowning doesn't look anything like it does in the movies... this is a good reminder to spread it around FB again... and yes, get your kids comfortable with the water and learn how to swim!!!

I actually felt safer doing the triathlon than I did doing the training. There were about 12 lifeguards over a 400 meter course watching our every move. At the bigger races, they even have Navy divers under water watching to make sure no one goes down.

I did not grow up swimming very much and have never been a very confident swimmer and that is why I am VERY insistent that my boys take swim lessons and learn.

It is kind of crazy the way it is all turning out. It turns out that the family and one of her friends (who was at the pool with her) goes to our church, so I have been able to keep up with what is going on. The last I heard last night was that it appears that God is literally working a miracle. After about 10 hours of no brain activity and the doctor pretty much telling the family they should pull life support, her pupils started reacting to light, she squeezed her mom's hand, and was looking around. I am still waiting for an update this morning.

I will forever hear that poor momma's screams--just praying that there can be a good outcome in spite of how horrible it is.

Literally makes me sick to my stomach. Especially since we've had a couple of incidents where my fearless Rory jumped into the pool with no floaties, deep end. Thankfully, we were always right there to see her and pull her out.

So glad to hear that she is doing better. That is a miracle indeed.

I am a HUGE believer of miracles and the power of a praying church, near and far... continuing to lift her and her family up in my prayers and for your community too... sweet girl you can do this, prove those drs wrong and show the power of God's mighty hand.

Awesome news, Becky, thanks for the update!! If you have any small chance of letting that mom know that there are a lot of people praying for her, more than she even knows, that may bring her some small dose of strength she may need right when she may need it.

Still praying...

Thanks for the update, Becky!! Praying she continues to recover. We just put in a pool and this is definitely a fear that runs through my mind on occasion but I also agree with Amy and I couldn't imagine my kids without water. The 3 oldest have loved it since infancy in their bath time. The oldest 2 can swim and my 4 year old is just about there also. Of course, they are never unsupervised while swimming but this story definitely puts me on higher alert. We are taking the precautions with a fence, pool alarm, safety rules and education etc..

OMG, that is so scary and sad! I'm signing up my toddler for swimming lessons immediately! Like, as soon as I hit post on this!

So scary! Thank God she is improving!
I live in a big apartment building full of expats with children and a huge pool, and I am amazed at the number of children here who are allowed to swim unsupervised.

Thank you so much for your prayers. I just sent her mom a message that you are all praying.

The most recent update is that she is actually taking some breaths on her own without the aid of the vent. she has been having several 'seizures' but the neurologist just told them this morning that they aren't true seizures, but myoclonic (?), and that this was good news.
