Laura's post about going on vacation to Paris and unplugging made me wonder.
Have you ever unplugged on vacation? Or do you search for vacations with the intent of staying plugged in?

When we went cruising to Alaska, my intent was to mostly unplug. I had just started school, and knew I wouldn't be able to fully unplug, but I got everything done I could before I went. And then in Sitka we sat in front of the public library and used their wi-fi so I could finish! Prior to that, it's usually when we head to Canada and tell people we will be "out of the country". :giggle Usually, I have access to the internet through my cousins, and Tim Horton's. But I like to act like I'm unavailable!

So, how about you? Have you taken a fully unplugged vacation? Or do you prefer to stay plugged in?

Whenever we cruise, during sea days I am totally unplugged! So relaxing. I tell my kids to call the cruise line if there is an emergency and they will let me know. It is very relaxing. However, in port, I usually check email.

I unplug when going away. I often unplug at home for a week or so during school holidays too.

Depends on the vacation and whether my laptop is traveling with me. If I have my laptop, then I can check email and keep it in check until I'm home again. If I don't check it, I could have hundreds of emails to deal with when vacation is over.

On my cruise 8 years ago, I did not have data nor did I have an international calling plan. I put my dumb phone in the room safe for the week.

Vacations since them have been to visit relatives, had internet access at both places along with my laptop. Any vacations in the future, I will probably at least check email on my phone but nothing else. Doing anything on the phone is too hard since it is so small. I would hope that I would be too busy to even want to be plugged in.

I often carry my laptop if just to scrap while everyone showers in the morning. I always shower first because my thick curls take forever to dry, so I have downtime while everyone else gets ready.

I very seldom unplug completely. When we go on vacation, I like to scrap and other things late in the evening or at night while everyone else is watching tv or when, like Desi said, everyone else is getting ready and I'm waiting.

We would often go up to Door County to spend a week in a little cabin. No TV, no phone, no radio. Once I tried convincing DH that I should bring my laptop so that we could watch movies. It was a no-go. So yes, I've done it multiple times. Enjoyed face to face conversations with DH, walks in the woods & walks by the water, reading, working on jigsaw puzzles, doing some art with a gluebook.

Errr ... sad to say I'm in the latter!
I definitely lessen the "being plugged in" ... but I get a little nuts if I have to go unplugged for too long. Funny you mention this now because my Mom just sent a link for a vacation house near TN/NC border for extended family to celebrate my Dad's 70th bday, and I was reading the reviews for the house ... one complaint was about the horrible wi-fi. I was like ugh, how am I going to survive for a week there!?!?! But then I saw the owner said the router was replaced and fixed. Relief! It's not even a definite trip yet ... but I was having a moment of anxiety! :giggle

I was unplugged in Alaska, too. I did purchase 30 minutes of wi-fi, but it expired before I could even log on.

I also did not post much when I was in London. It was kind of funny, though, when all of us pulled out our phones once we got to a restaurant. Free wi-fi, but we needed to register each time. I’m pretty sure I made up a different e-mail address each time.

At night at the hotel, I faced timed my husband because calling would have been too expensive.

I do remember going to Mexico back in 2006, when we didn't have smart phones. They had a computer lab so you could pay for like 10 minute blocks of time to check email. I never did because I didn't want to be stuck inside lol!

I was mostly unplugged when we went to Florida last year. The hotel offered wifi but it was slow and I'm too impatient lol. I did check email like once or twice just in case the kids' schools sent anything (they missed school for our trip). DH was more "plugged in" cuz he wanted to check with work every morning and night.

We are currently trying to plan a vacation for the two of us this summer (we looked this afternoon!). We'll bring our phones cuz we have young kids and this will be the first time my mom and dad will have them overnight/for a long time lol, but otherwise our phones will be only for gorgeous photos and no email! I swear I'm going to throw his phone into the ocean if he looks at work stuff while we're out and about!

We just got back home from vacation. We used our phones for photos (now getting the photos off my children's phones is a chore). There was some computer use (mostly me) in the morning when I was up and they were still sleeping (they are of the hit the park at 11am or noon and stay until it closes type). I drove all the time we were in Fla and almost all the way home, so I had no real down time in the car. Hubby did about a hour or two of work on the way home.

We have a cruise coming up in June. I need to check our phone plan...

I am always totally unplugged while we are away but keep in contact with family through text messages if this is available. I love the time unplugged. So invigorating.

I can't stand to be unplugged for very long. My parents never had wifi (gasp) and back in the day, I'd take my laptop to any coffee shop, etc. that had free wifi about every other day. I used to have to go stay with them for a month at a time, to help out and I'd slip out every couple of days to check my computer. Later on, I got an air card so I had wifi anywhere I went. I used to go to Panera Bread - (it was close to their house) and sit in my car and use their wifi. :happydance2:happydance2

I'm definitely less plugged in when I'm away. But totally unplugged? No.
I check social media in the morning and before bed. But if there is no connection that's not a problem. So I don't need to stay connected but it's more of a habit.
I definitely don't do anything work-related. So I unplug from that. ;)

no re the unplugged... with wifi available, even when we went to the UK I was able to check FB while riding in the coach (tour bus)... I used FB instant messenger to contact family and even Face timed with my nephew while we were in London and he was on leave with my brother in SC. I enjoy my vacations.. I just check in with close family while we are away.

I rarely totally unplug, but I know I should. There just always seems to be some work catastrophe that only I can solve (which isn't entirely true - someone else could solve it, it's just easier for me to answer a quick text or email). I do try to limit any of my time reading email to when John is still asleep (I'm always up earlier than he is because of the dogs) and then unplug when he gets up.

I almost never am totally unplugged any more. When we used to travel a lot in our early marriage (early 2000s) it was expensive to find net plans (cruise ships felt like old dial up) and they were pricey. DH did use them to work all during our trips & he used the dongle when on land. I often scrapped as I could get my iPhone images uploaded and then downloaded fairly easily but I no longer bother to do that. Now that places like AirBnBs have better wife, I do take my iPad lots of places and watch movies etc on it when I get tired of reading. I almost never read via the Kindle app but could if I wanted to. I'd rather watch odd bits of tv or buy new books. We always have our phones and use them to text each other during the day. While I have a new MacBookPro, I've yet to take it anywhere.

At home, I'm definitely off line during my phone's sleep mode. Everyone knows if you don't get me before 10, forget it.

I usually "check in" while on "vacation" but I try to stay off as much as possible.

This past weekend I went to a 3 day convention with my 2 older girls. I went off-line. It was the nicest thing & I totally didn't miss it. I definitely need to do it more often even when I'm just at home.

I'm generally unplugged during the day while I'm vacation, but I log in at night when we're back at our hotel and in the morning when I'm waiting for the rest of my family to wake up. (I'm the early bird in a family of night owls. :)) I will mostly read my current book, or work on a knit project, or to start a layout or two during our downtime. I don't connect to wi-fi for most of that -- only to check the internet to confirm something I'm putting on a layout, such as the name and spelling of a place -- so maybe I'm naturally more unplugged than plugged. LOL
