Happy National Pistachio Day!

I keep forgetting I have a pistachio gelato in the freezer. I need to eat it today to celebrate!

Some pistachio facts (that I haven’t verified): “The pistachio tree grows to about 20 feet tall needing little or no rain and must have high heat. Amazingly, in Iran, they claim to have 700-year-old pistachio trees! A new tree takes between 7 and 10 years to mature and bear fruit.
  • In the Middle East, people call the pistachio the smiling nut.
  • In China, people call the pistachio the happy nut.“
When’s the last time you ate a pistachio?
What is your favorite tree nut to eat?
Do you know anyone with a nut allergy?
Have you ever seen or grown a nut tree?
If nuts aren’t your thing, what do you eat instead?

When’s the last time you ate a pistachio?

What is your favourite tree nut to eat?
macadamia
Do you know anyone with a nut allergy?
yes several friends
Have you ever seen or grown a nut tree?
There are hazelnut and walnut trees in the community orchard
If nuts aren’t your thing, what do you eat instead?
nuts are a staple snack food in my house.

When’s the last time you ate a pistachio?
Today, actually. I added some to my salad (greens, beets, goat cheese, orange, and pistachios)
What is your favorite tree nut to eat?
my go to is raw almonds.
Do you know anyone with a nut allergy?
yes, oddly my daughter -- as far as we know she was never allergic as a child, but she developed the nut allergy as an adult
Have you ever seen or grown a nut tree?
I have seen pecan trees when I grew up in the southeast, but I have never grown one
If nuts aren’t your thing, what do you eat instead?
I like most nuts, and consume some most days.

When’s the last time you ate a pistachio? Hmm, probably a few months ago. I like them and we always have some on hand but I find them too much work to eat. :giggle

Do you know anyone with a nut allergy? I dated a guy who was allergic to peanut oil but that was a long time ago. I don't think I know anyone personally with a nut allergy other than him.
Have you ever seen or grown a nut tree? I've seen nut trees but never grown one.
If nuts aren’t your thing, what do you eat instead? I eat a small handful of almonds almost every day - mainly as a low carb snack combined with one of those individually wrapped Tilamook sharp white cheddar snack slices. Perfect combo.

I'm not a huge fan of pistachios, but you would think that my Iranian roommate brought one of those 700 year old trees with her the way she eats them! LOL

Ooh yes I love macadamia nuts. I didn’t know anyone with nut allergies when I was little but now I know a few.

That’s interesting your daughter developed the allergy as an adult. I grew up with a walnut tree next door and they would fall over our fence so we could enjoy fresh walnuts.

I love Tillamook cheese and nuts combined on salad! I agree pistachios are too much work to shell so I buy them shelled.

I like walnuts too, particularly in baked goods. Until recently she was ok with peanuts.

lol I’m curious how they know they’re 700 years old!

Fun fact; the largest pistachio is actually in my town!
Our little basin(flat bottom valley) is filled with pistachio and pecan trees.
My main nut used is piñon (pine) nuts grown in the forest up the road. (For pesto).

This is fascinating! I love the possibility that there are known 700 year old trees. And I've recently discovered I like pistachios. I don't know how I didn't have them growing up or encounter them anywhere for decades. They're pretty popular it seems. But I only just bought some for the first time a few months ago because a recipe called for them. And when I made the recipe a second time (or maybe it was a new recipe calling for pistachios too) when I was looking for them at the store I found some that were already seasoned with garlic and onion. Extra yummy.

When’s the last time you ate a pistachio? I finished off that bag just a few days ago.
What is your favorite tree nut to eat? Do you mean out of hand or as an ingredient? I don't actually eat them out of hand a lot. I use them to top bowls of food mostly. I think walnuts are my favorite for that. I also like almonds a lot. But as an ingredient, cashews are the most awesome nut (maybe not officially a nut though, I think I read). You can make creamy sauces/spreads/dips and vegan cheese with cashews. My favorite popcorn topping is ground cashews, nutritional yeast, lemon zest, and garlic powder. Cashews are so versatile!
Do you know anyone with a nut allergy? Tough question. My middle child has multiple food allergies and tree nuts are/were one of them. But their RAST number was so low in 2018 the allergist said we could trial nuts. However, before we could get started on that, my kid (age 15 at the time) had a reaction to dairy and then decided they weren't in the mood for doing the trial. Almost 8 years later, they still haven't wanted to do it. I sometimes suggest it because nuts are such a healthy food and it would expand their food choices. As for other people, in our homeschooling years and since working in school, I've known a few kids with nut allergies.
Have you ever seen or grown a nut tree? Nope, but I'd be interested!
If nuts aren’t your thing, what do you eat instead? I eat nuts or seeds (or both!) every day! One of the healthiest things we can eat!

I love that you had your own fun fact to share Anne! Pine nuts remind me of camping with my family because we would buy them on the side of the road.

I’m glad you’ve finally discovered pistachios and enjoy them. The seasoned ones sound delicious! I’ve bought seasoned almonds but not seasoned pistachios.

I didn’t realize cashews are so versatile. I love to eat them by the handful.

I’m sorry about your middle child’s allergies and untimely reaction. Allergic reactions are scary stuff.

When’s the last time you ate a pistachio?
Not recently. It's not a flavour I tend to gravitate towards

What is your favorite tree nut to eat?
Almonds

Do you know anyone with a nut allergy?
Me! Not allergy per say but an intolerance to cashews. Was not happy when I lost the ability to eat cashews as it meant no more bliss balls that are commercially made. I have found a few cashew-less recipes though that I'll try out

Have you ever seen or grown a nut tree?
Nope

If nuts aren’t your thing, what do you eat instead?
Seeds. I swap between Soy & Linseed or Sunflower & Chia gluten free bread depending on what's available. I also make a DIY salad seed topper for sprinkling on some of my salads - usually linseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds & almonds. Most people would probably add in garlic flakes but I'm intolerant so I don't

I like almonds more than pistachios. I’m sorry about your cashew intolerance! That would make me very sad!
