I have spent most of the morning working on some things for the beginning of the school year. If you don't know, I am a high school special education teacher, and summer vacation is not completely vacation LOL. Anyway, in thinking about that and Desi's @GlazeFamily3 thread about dream jobs, I was reminded of how much I love to talk about what I do and my kids. At one point, I wanted to teach at the college level, but that never materialized, and second to my love of teaching students with special needs is teaching others about students with special needs. I've had the honor of presenting to several groups over the years, including members of the state dept. of education.

So, here's my question for today... If you were giving a presentation, what would the topic be? Is there something you are passionate about that you'd like to share with others? Is there some quirky thing that you are good at that you could do a presentation on? Curious minds want to know :)

What you do sounds incredible and what a gift you give to others, as well as loving it as much as you do!

I have had terrible stage fright my whole life. However, when I was working as a Human Resource Developer & Trainer, my passion outweighed my stage fright. I never thought I could get up in front of a whole room full of people and try to sell them on how important it is to work together for the greater good. I was also a facilitator for many smaller groups and had to maintain control and order to sometimes pretty rowdy (mostly) men.

Jan, I am so thankful for teachers that specialize in Special Education. It has been so rough here for my son/daughter-in-law dealing with their special needs children. Around here it seems that Special Education has been taken out of the schools and for some children is not possible for them to go to "regular classroom".

Oh wow, I don't feel like I know enough of anything to give a professional presentation about it!

I did have to give a presentation to a whole bunch of professionals that have students of ours do internships at their organizations. It was about our Health & Technology program which is kinda hip and happening right now and I am one of the teachers who teaches this class and are in the workgroup. (I feel like that's a weird translate, can't think of something better though) It was nerve-wrecking, especially when one of our college managers decided to sit in as well.
But in the end I got a lot of positive feedback and really, it's not that much different from what I do everyday. ;)

I was so incredibly shy and kind of backward until I went away to college and had to take a speech class, since then just try to shut me up LOL But the stage fright was real. Kudos to you to be able to control those men...I know how some are from my days as chairman of the special education dept.

Thank you, Debbie. I'm so sorry that your son and daughter-in-law are having such a rough time. I know there has been a big push for keeping kids in the general curriculum, and for some it is great, but for others it is just not what is best for them. I am fortunate to teach in a district that realizes that for the most part. I have taught mostly self-contained classes, but I have also done co-teaching in a regular classroom which worked really well also.

I would definitely talk about memory keeping.

After that, I'd likely talk about books.

You do a great job of doing that already with us in your Watch Cheryl Scrap chats. I could see you at a conference rocking their socks with you expertise in memory keeping or books!!

For sure... when you are a teacher, you do presentations pretty much every single day. But it is a bit different when you have to speak in front of peers. That sounds like a really cool program and as the teacher of it, you are the knowledgeable one!!

mine would be about the reality of finding a job straight from university, the idea that just because you have a degree doesn’t make it any easier

professionally.....i’m not sure and that’s only cause i’ve done a fair number of assignments and presentations on topics in the disability sector already.

What a great presentation that would be!! Lots of students could benefit from hearing your experiences!

It was a few years ago, but I've given a few presentation for my local photography club. One was a survey of the many online photography resources I've used over those early years. Another time I talked about how I use Photoshop (it was Elements back then) for scrapbooking. Those are still the topics I feel I'd be most able to present about. Maybe another would be homeschooling.

That photography presentation sounds super interesting! I bet you are a wonderful presenter!

I love to speak to other women in my company about women's issues and career/life balance. About speaking up, advocating for themselves, asserting themselves in our very male dominated field. About being a mom, a wife, and an employee and how we can't be perfect at all of them. Now that I have a large team in India the challenges are even greater - many cultural issues still at play there impacting a woman's ability to be treated equally not only at work but in the home as well.

We have our daughter's blessing event/school leaving ceremony coming up. 4 mins of public speaking. I let hubby do most of the heavy lifting as he flows with encouraging words. But I do pray into it and speak volumes in my head - if that counts?

Um, my friends and family will tell you I'm passionate about memory keeping, photo printing and backing up photos!
It doesn't have to be a scrapbook; a journal or even just an app that you can get the memories out! In fact, next week I'll be helping my friend organize her photos for printing.
And school that fits the child. Whether that's homeschool, charter school, public school or something else. Fitting the child so they can thrive.

That's so awesome! What a fantastic thing to do presentations on! Wow! I am sure that's quite different in India!

It sure does count! Sounds like a lovely ceremony!

I would love to hear you present on any one of those topics. You are a great presenter in our Adobe chats and I think you would be fabulous as a presenter at a conference or something like that!

Years ago I did a presentation on card making , before a crowd of cross stitchers, nerve wrecking...but fun.
Now if given en the opportunity I would like to give one on combining computer skills with crafting. And the importance of letting your art (craft) live in the real world ,not just on your screen.

wow ladies.

For me, I used to give presentations about complex Engineering Mathematics. I was a world expert once upon a time. I found my presentation slides from a conference in a sort out last year, and they looked like complete and total gibberish. I guess I won't be picking that career back up when I'm available for paid work again.

Now a days, I would choose to either give presentations on biblical living or on healthy lifestyles. My areas of expertise (but not my subjects of choice) at the moment would be type 1 diabetes in children, and carbohydrate counting, and in high functioning autism (both in children and adults).

oh the public speaking thing - not my friend - i can research and make presentations or write papers on most things but the giving of the presentation is the scary bit! Big respect for what you do, Jan!

When I first started scrapbooking, I was also actively involved in our local genealogy society. I did a presentation about making sure to document who are in those photos. Of course, there was a photo I focused on that was presented on a CM scrapbook page. That page was in my heritage scrapbook :)

About 8 years ago, I took a course through my church called "Financial Peace University" by Dave Ramsey. It turned my life around. Even though I was an accountant and knew what budgeting was I didn't apply it to my personal life. I thought I was doing fine. I was wrong! Once you take the course, you can take it again for free. I took it again 2 years later to get re-motivated in the process. After that I wanted to bring it to the company I worked for since there were a lot of employees that lived paycheck to paycheck. I was able to do that using the workplace version of the program. So I facilitated 3 classes and a co-worker facilitated another 2 classes (she was in the first one I did!) before they decided to drop the program :banghead. In addition to that, the company had "lunch 'n learn" every couple of months. I did 2 of those on the budgeting process and how to make your money work for you before I retired in 2017.

Nowadays, a presentation of any kind is not on my agenda :giggle

Things that I love to talk about (besides scrapbooking, of course!):
  • Homeschooling-empowering women, how to, curriculum choices (especially classical education)...
  • Adoption
  • Navigating deafness-more specifically CIs, cued speech, language acquisition, audio-verbal therapy, etc...
I will talk your ear off on any of these subjects if you ask me to. I have led some meetings and discussions on some of these topics.
