I haven't even heard of most of them. I haven't seen any of them and probably won't. I'm never fond of remakes, so don't want to see A Star is Born. That would probably be the only one I'd eve be interested in seeing.

@bonnenuit it's so cool that your town has this marathon!
here, the main reason I could not see more nominees movies was the lack of theatres showing them.
I really enjoy going to the movies to watch the Oscar's nominees, and I'll try to see tonight's ceremony

My husband and I try to watch as many Oscar nominated films as we can each year, but this year life got in the way and we've seen very few. Of best picture nominees, we've only see Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice. I really want to see The Favourite. We thought about watching it last night but on On Demand it was only available to buy vs. rent. We also thought about watching Roma since it's on Netflix, but neither one of us were in the mood for subtitles. We opted for Can You Ever Forgive Me? which is up for best actress, supporting actor and adapted screenplay.

Other than that, it's an odd sprinkling of movies:
Cold War - Foreign Language Film
RBG - Documentary Feature
Isle of Dogs - Animated Feature Film
And half of Minding the Gap - Documentary Feature (my daughter had to watch the first half at home for her film class and they watched the second half in class)

A theater by us that we just became members of started showing the shortlisted documentaries back in December. We saw Won't You Be My Neighbor? and couldn't believe it wasn't nominated. We also watched Three Identical Strangers which was shortlisted... and although I enjoyed it, I can see why it did not get the nomination.

The only one I've seen was Black Panther, and that's because hubby rented it (or maybe bought it, I'm not sure) and I was cross stitching while I watched. **giggle**

So I'm not voting . . . as it was good but good enough to win an Oscar against the others that I haven't seen?

I think it's interesting that of the responses here, only a few are regular movie goers/watchers. I think we're all scrapping instead of watching movies. LOL

I think it's interesting as well and I think you're right! I very rarely go to the theater, once a year or less, because I just have a really hard time sitting there for 2 hours. I do enjoy getting Redbox movies or catching things on streaming, but I can scrap or do other things while watching those :)

We've seen Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born, Black Panther and Vice. Next we want to see Green Book and The Favorite. I'm watching the Oscars Pre-Show right now and can't wait for the awards. Its the only award show I watch.

I haven't seen any of the Best Picture noms except Black Panther and while I think it's a wonderful film, I don't think it's a Best Picture. But I hated Crash and The Shape of Water, which won in 2006 and 2018 respectively, so what do I know? *shrug*

So I don't feel right saying what I think should win but I can say that I can't wait until all the films are available via Netflix. I'm also sad that Won't You Be My Neighbor? wasn't up for best doc. Neither was Three Identical Strangers, which was a fascinating story told very well. But that wasn't the question so I'll be quiet now lol!

LOL Jan..I have not seen any of the nominated movies. I figure I will wait until they are running on the movie channels I already get.. not going to rent them from on demand. I really want to see Vice., heard it was good too.
LOL- me either. Oscars, Grammys, Academy Awards, Golden Globe: :no2YAWN. They are all just people who put pants on one leg at a time, burp, snore, trip and fall. Never been a "name" person, never will be. Just not my "thing".:hide:backing
Will be watching The Umbrella Academy instead.

I was happy to see this morning that First Man did win an Oscar for Visual Effects. Glad to know that it wasn't shut out. And, the only reason I care about it is because I knew the real life person the movie was about. Neil was very nice to me whenever I saw him. May he RIP.

I was intrigued to see a movie about menstruation win an award! Especially since people were saying"icky" beforehand.
I saw black panther. Loved it. I'm not into "artsy" type movies, so I never see many of the Oscars nominees, even though we see a lot of movies around here.

I don’t think many of the movies in this year’s best picture nom would be considered artsy. There is so much backlash today over the winner though.

I saw Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born.

I am a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan so it was on my 'must see' list. Malek did a fabulous job as Mercury and I don't think anyone could have done it better. I was disappointed in some of the things that were incorrect in the movie but alas that's Hollywood and I know they have to change things.

A Star is Born was amazing! Loved Gaga and Cooper together, they were totally believable.

As for Black Panther, it was the same as all the other Marvel movies, good but I wouldn't say Oscar-worthy. It was no better than Avengers Infinity War.

I hadn't even heard of most of these plus I always thought the Oscars were on in March!! I want to see Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born, not sure about the others but only because I haven't any idea what they're about. Time to do some research!

I was shocked that Green Book won. I thought it was good but I didn't think it was Best Picture worthy. In Oscar history, though, the voting doesn't always go to the movie that stands the test of time and is remembered as truly the best. Citizen Kane, considered to be the best American movie ever by many, lost the Best Picture Oscar to How Green Was My Valley.

LOL! You are correct - artsy wasn't the right word. I don't know how I would explain it.
A Star is Born is a remake, so meh.
Green Book - the plot I heard about it reminded me of Driving Ms. Daisy, so I lumped it into a remake category. I didn't know it was sorta based on real life. I did know it was a Farrelly brother movie, and I held that against it. I don't care for their humor overall.
Bohemian Rhapsody - Meh. I enjoy queen music, I don't need to see a biopic about them.
Vice - not in the mood for political.

I guess a better way of putting it is: The best picture nominees seemed like each was directed towards a specific audience. Like, here's one for those who like period pieces, here's one for the geeks, here's one for the music set, here's one for the biography fans. Does that make more sense?

I was watching everything unfold on Twitter because I don't have cable and couldn't access it online, and the tweets after Period won were greatness.
I never see many of the best picture nominated movies either, so the fact that I had seen a couple this year was intriguing for me.

Totally happy that Malek won!
The main thing I wanted to see of the whole show was the Shallow performance. I love Bradley Cooper even more than I did before :)

I agree about the voting for sure!

Totally agree that it seemed like each were directed toward a certain audience...all very different types of movies.

I didn't see all the movies so maybe I'll feel differently once I see them but was surprised that Green Book won best picture. I was thrilled that Shallow won best song but wished that Bradley Cooper had gotten some kind of recognition for his achievement, as I feel the song was more an award for Lady Gaga. I find it incredible that he directed, starred and producted his movie. R. Malek I feel totally deserved his award as his acting was top notch IMO.

I enjoyed the night. I always love to see who is with whom, what they wear, etc. It was great to see Barbara Streisand and Bett Midler too.
