I started watching this series this week and am curious now the title "The Chi" is pronounced.

Chi like chai? surely not 'shi' like sh*t ! my husband (a non-watcher) and I could not come up with anything that made sense to us Easterners.

:thinking2

Thank you ladies! Now, if I have to refer to the show in public, I'll say "The Shy". Apparently, I'll have to make more trips out there.:driving

I was born and raised in Chicago (the city proper, not the suburbs) and I have absolutely NO CLUE. But I suspect "shy" is the correct pronunciation.

Good to know.
Across this side of the pond we say she-caGO. She as a short sound not like the word she.
We have a Windy City too though - Port Elizabeth.

I am flabbergasted. I absolutely do not understand the different logics you speak of.
I guess that's the downside of not living in an English speaking country.

I would have pronounced it the way like it's pronounced in the word "tai chi".

My mom was born and raised in Chicago before moving out here in the early 60's, she's heard it said both ways Shy and Chai like tea/latte LOL

Try teaching it! :duh

C says K but C also says S. And i before e except after C or when sounding like ay as in neighbor, and weigh. Not to be confused and spelled like way even though they sound identical.
Sigh. First grade reading is hard!

Captain Circle -- we did vertical phonics - is for the sounds of C.

I grew up in the Midwest and we pronounced it with a strong shhhhsssh sound - but we were from Michigan so what did we know? So giving the "ch" the "sh" sound, but the "i" is short and pretty much non-existent. So not "shy", but "shsss-ca-go"

What? No! I have never heard anyone say Shy-town.... for "Chi-town" It's Chai-town! Hard Ch like choo choo train. And long i like eye! :giggle I am shocked to hear Tracie @tkradtke say the other way. So funny! ps. I don't live IN Chicago, but it's right across my lake from me and I've been there a zillion times and my best friend lived there for years... so I know stuff! Lol!

BTW.....is this show good? I've been PVRing it but haven't watched yet. I assumed it was pronounced like chai (tea).

All us Michigan ladies are like 'say what!' I've always just said Chicago 'Chi' not 'Shy'

One thing you will learn if you ever spend time here in the USA depending on where you come from your accent is different which means If you hear someone you can a lot of time detect what part of the country they are from.

I had no idea the pronunciation of Chicago would be so controversial. LOL I grew up in Illinois (west-central side) and never heard it pronounced any way other than shi-KAH-go (short i) and then shy-town as the nickname.

Curious about the show title, I went and looked at their website, and conveniently none of their trailers ever actually say the name of the show out loud. :giggle I did find an interview with the creator of the show though, and she says the shy. :agree
