Ok you Windy City women...tell me how you say...The Chi

Fascinating. Born and raised, home to my heart, and family still living there and if I'm not using the full name it's, "Shy" town (Chi-Town), always. Locals rarely actually call it "Chi-Town", but if we were it would be "Shy". :beat

And now I'm completely intrigued by this show and must investigate. :giggle

Dang - I've always said Chai for Chi. Had no idea! Makes sense bc like @KimJ mentioned ... I do say shi-KAH-go (short i) !!! I botch a lot of pronounciations though - I am forever getting made fun of for that in my house!

I say Shy-Town. Because DH was in that area serving a church mission, and that's how he says it. South Side Chicago. But, since he likes to say - Sh - CAG -o. (cag like Cat) I figured he might have taught me wrong. :giggle

Oh I have heard that one too! Sh-CAG-o - but you sort of have to sing it because I think it was a line from a song.

I'll jump in and say, it might have been both at some point. My dad is a Chicago native that transplanted in MI and so growing up it's always been Chi as in Shy

I am flabbergasted. I absolutely do not understand the different logics you speak of.
I guess that's the downside of not living in an English speaking country.

I would have pronounced it the way like it's pronounced in the word "tai chi".

You know it's a messed up language when the word 'phonetic' means 'spelled like it sounds'... only it isn't!

North Central Illinoisian here - I've always heard it pronounced SHY-town ... funny that when I meet people and they ask where I'm from and I tell them northern Illinois, they automatically assume I live in Chicago - but nope - not a chance! Our son lived in Chicago proper while going to college and he and our DIL then lived in a northern suburb for a few years ... great place to visit but I would not wish to live there! :-)
