Goodbye 2022...Hello 2023.

Do you have any New Years Eve or New Years traditions?

Growing up, it was very common for my mom and I to put together a puzzle on New Years Eve. And then on New Years Day have a cabbage based dish. My mom would often do cabbage rolls.

This year its a puzzle for me and cabbage + sausage for the New Years meal. :beat
 
Nothing really. We are just relaxing, watching some movies and steak & BP for dinner... I never see the ball drop anymore. Too tired to stay up LOL

Growing up we always had Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls on New Year's morning. They now have them in a package of 5 rolls instead of 8 so I picked one up and will fix those in the morning.

As for tonight, no traditions here but I normally stay home. The last time I went out was NYE 1999 and I went to a friend's house for dinner then we waited to see if the world would shut down with the "y2k" thing when other time zones hit midnight. It didn't, we cheered and I came home!
 
No New Years traditions around here, I’m too much of a homebody to do anything special. Some years I will have a “drink” to toast the new year in but didn’t buy any this year.
 
I really don’t like this holiday, not only because I feel for my cats being scared all day (or days!) because of all the fireworks. So I’ve decided a few years ago on a new tradition. Sitting at home in my lounge suit, and binging some tv show. There is always a Christmas puzzle on my table too. New Year’s Day We all go to my mom and have “oliebollen”, “appelflappen” and “kniepertjes” (traditional Dutch New Year’s Eve and Day snacks).
 
Shoot! I forgot to add the cabbage to the Walmart order I picked up this morning! Yes, cabbage on New Year's Day :)
No real NYE traditions other than to watch the ball drop. These days I'm usually babysitting so the younger ones can go out, but this year I'm dog sitting. The weather is really nice today, so we may brave the celebration downtown where they have their own ball drop. It's made out of a bunch of CDs and they drop it from a huge crane. They haven't done it since 2019 but, it's so cold every year, we usually pass.

Happy New Year everyone! Don't do any party or anything. Watching some TV, have a nice dinner. The only tradition we have really, is that we make a Fultårta ("ugly cake") every new year's eve. Basically it's a simple layered cake with cream, mashed banana and chocolate mousse. Everything made from powder, store bought cake and basically as "white trashy" as possible. Then we write the coming year on it and decorate it with candy. Goal is to make it as non-fancy at possible.

This is my childish counter reaction to all the fancy recipes people start to share (and never make) during the week leading up not NYE. I've never understood it. Why celebrating that a crappy year has ended and that there's a new crappier one starting? It's just a new date, innit? #AllYearRoundGrinch #GrinchensAndScroogesLoveChild
 
I'm soaking black-eyed peas (for luck!) right now and I'll cook them up along with some cabbage (for wealth!) and sausage for dinner tomorrow.

My husband and son will do some basic fireworks tonight (the small sparkly kind not the big bang bang kind).

And I'll download the One Second Everyday app again and say "this year I'm gonna do the whole year!" and then my February tradition is to delete the app because I haven't used it in 3 weeks :lol

Other than that, we're pretty low-key. Happy new year everyone!!
 
For the last 20 years, we've hosted a NYE party at our house for our closest friends. We have a big fondue (my hubby is a fondue sauce master and always makes 6 different sauces each year) with beef, shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, hotdogs as a kid favorite, etc. One of our friends always brings a chocolate fountain for dessert. The kids have a big bingo tournament with prizes and we watch the ball drop. One nice thing about living in AZ is that we can watch the (NYC) ball drop at 10 pm AZ time and then the guests can head home with less worry about drunk drivers. Sometimes DH and I stay up til actual midnight and sometimes not. Here's a page I made about it during last MOC and a couple earlier pages





 
We usually have champagne when the ball drops (since we live in Central time zone, the ball drops at 11pm here), then go to bed. I haven't gone out on New Years Eve in YEARS! My kids all have plans tonight, so our usual Chocolate Fondue has been postponed until tommorow so everyone can join in. Happy New Year to everyone!

This is so interesting to me as I’ve never heard about associating food with New Year’s predictions. Hmm? I wonder what pizza and diet coke bring!

I think the Earth completing a revolution around the sun is pretty fascinating. The universe is an amazing place. So, although I tend to be a boring old homebody (seems most of us are here ) I find the New Year to be pretty amazing.

I don’t know that App. Maybe I should download it then delete it too. Hahaha. That’s “so me.”

When I was little we would drive around our neighborhood at midnight with the van door open banging pots and pans and screaming Happy New Year. :) We would also have a movie marathon and watch an entire series like Star Wars or Indiana Jones. We often had a puzzle going too.

Last year we lit sparklers at midnight and basically froze our fingers off so we won't be doing that again haha

This year we're doing games, movies, and treats all night then a toast with Cranberry Ginger Ale at midnight.

Oh it's actually so cool and perfect for us memory keepers. You just take 1 second worth of video and it stitches the clips all together and makes the coolest memory video of the year (or whatever increment you want). 1 second doesn't sound like enough but you'd be surprised how it can bring back that memory.

OMG, you reminded me that when we would spend New Years Eve with my grandparents, they would always wake us up just prior to midnight to run outside and bang pots and pans. We thought that was the best thing EVER!
