Libraries | Pad Patter 4.4.24

Did you go to the library when you were little? Oh yeah! We loved it and my Mom loved it because it was free entertainment for us both when we were there and then when we got home with our stack of books!

Do you use your local library? I love my library. I used a TON of the electronic books and audiobooks, but I also go there and check stuff out sometimes too. They also have a great used book sale in the spring each year, so I always go check that out too. It's next week in fact. Do I need anymore books at home? No. Will I probably buy some anyway? Yep! :giggle I took my kids to the library a ton when they were little too, especially when they did their summer reading programs. They had the best time picking out a tote bag full of books and getting rewards at the end of the summer.

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians? I don't think so, but like you we had a nearby neighbor that worked at our library when I was a kid.
I think I love the summer reading rewards even more than my kids do! ;)

Did you go to the library when you were little? Yes!
Do you use your local library? Yes! All the time. They know us well. We just went yesterday.
Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians? No, but I did work at a library when we lived in Orlando.

I loved going to the library when I was a kid. My parents both read a lot and we used to go the whole family. We lived 5 km from the library but we also had a library bus stopping in our village once a month. My uncle Owe worked as a combined driver/librarian on the bus and he was the kindest man, so I visited the bus every time just to see him (and get some new books).

I still love the scents in the library, something you can’t get through a book app! Today I don’t visit the library much, but I have always taken my kids to the library when they grew up. Maybe it’s time to go there more frequently!

I always say I missed my calling and should have been a librarian. They do SO much more these days it seems...like run fun events.

Yes, I was always at the library when I was little. There was one in town and it was big (well, felt big to me) and it's where I got everything from. We had an adults side and kids side and to go to the adults side you had to have permission and I remember the first time I got to go to the other side! I was probably 5th or 6th grade. Great moment! lol

I do go to ours. It's an interesting story though. I live in a large city where the closest library when we moved here was about 20 min drive, but about 8 minutes away was a smaller suburb we border. We were allowed to get a library card from our city, but use it at that towns library in a reciprocal type relationship (we could actually access about 15 different cities libraries). In 2019 they opened a library about 5 mins from my house, so my city must have decided they no longer needed to participate in this reciprocal program, so they pulled out of it. Which meant we couldn't "access" the other one for free. My kids grew up there. We were there once-twice a week. I did programs there, my son was on the "teen" advisory board....but now I felt not welcome. I tried the new library, but it's very sterile and very non-welcoming. About 4 months ago I gave up and went back to the other town and paid their small fee to join their library again. lol. the GREAT thing was it was filled with the same librarians, and the one helping me with my card was like "where have you been?" She recognized me. It's been like 4.5 years. She said a lot of people have come back in the last year that used to use theirs saying the same thing about our city library. lol. So, now I have my card, this other card - and this one allows me access to all those other libraries again!!!

Did you go to the library when you were little? Yes, we use to go for story time and the summer reading program and just to play on their giant wooden boat thingy

Do you use your local library?
Not as much as I use to, I go sometimes to print things out for cheap or make copies. but I don't read much anymore. I was an English major in collage and got readed out ... if that makes sense?

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians?
my cousin works at our public one..

Libraries are amongst humanities GREATEST inventions I always say. I have a lifelong love for libraries! (I also like alliteration and very pleased with that sentence, which I didn't even mean to do as alliteration.)

Did you go to the library when you were little? just my elementary school library, but it was a good one, with a great librarian . . . She invited us to come into the library and do crafts while she read books such as James And The Giant Peach. I still remember her Swedish accent. In my last year of elementary school, I got to leave my regular classroom regularly to go to work in her library doing things like stamping the school name in new books and gluing in the pockets. I learned early to love that new book smell.

Do you use your local library? Very very very much! I use the library more than I go shopping.

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians? No, but I tried really hard over the years from around 2017 through 2021 to get a job at the library. I'm flabbergasted that they didn't think I was qualified to work in their children's programs doing the same kinds of things I did as a schoolteacher in the 1990's, just because I don't have a masters degree. Oh, well, I probably get paid better at my paraeducator job than a librarian. I guess I'm just meant to love and use libraries not serve others there and share my love of the written word. Or maybe someday further in the future . . .

Did you go to the library when you were little?
Yes, from what I know I was so into books I had my own library card at the age of around 2 cause the libraries were so sick of overriding the limit on my mum's card

Do you use your local library?
Not at the moment - I've lost my library card and a couple of books so am currently not able to.

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians?
Nope

I was such a fan of the library as a kid. I loved my local library in our county courthouse...the smell, and ALL.THE.BOOKS! I loved it so much, I ended up working there in high school, and thought about becoming a librarian. I got to dress up as a frog one summer for our Leap Into Summer with Books program for kids! Aw...good times! Mostly, I just put books away (we were called Pages). And on Saturdays, we had to swap out the newspapers...that was dirty work. Oh, and every time they wanted to re-arrange, we had to move those books! Books are really dirty! LOL In college, I worked in the back office sorting the library pocket cards back into order and typing up library cards (This was 1981, so you know, typewriters! No computers!) I always took my kids to the library for story time and summer reading programs. Now, I don't visit the library. I just buy books at thrift stores, because I don't want to have deadlines for reading, but I so appreciate the whole institution and how it's evolved over the years as technology came into play. Salute to libraries!

I love that your library knows you well. :) That’s fun you worked at a library!

I’m glad you’re back to enjoying the friendly library. So sad yours changed!

I definitely understand getting readed out…my high school English classes made me feel like that sometimes. Reading for fun is much more enjoyable than reading for school.

I like alliteration too so good job with that sentence. ;) I love that you were able to work in your elementary school library and that you use the library more than you go shopping.

I love that you were so into books at such a young age! I was not a big reader when I was little so I’m catching up now.

I never thought about how dirty books are; I do know newspapers are dirty because I’ve had a paper route and I’ve washed windows with newspapers. I want the library job where you put books away; maybe someday…

You wanna know something funny? For a hot second I decided I would try reading a horror novel. After that I got scared going into that section to put away books!

I used to go to the library too when i was little.

i do go now but prefer to use the digital portion of my library to read books on my phone.

i don't have any relatives that are librarians.

Ditto to what you said .. we have a friends of the library that you can buy books from all the time which i used to do. i also donated most of my books back to them for selling just keeping only a few of my favorite books!
