Happy National School Librarian Day!

My aunt is a school librarian and she always gifts books which I love. I have very fond memories of going to the library when I was little. My neighbor worked there so I thought it was fun every time we would check out books with her. Now I use more electronic resources from our local library but my kids still prefer physical books so I go to our library to pick up their holds.

Did you go to the library when you were little?
Do you use your local library?
Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians?

Did you go to the library when you were little? Yes, my mother used to take us once a week to get books. And we had a bookmobile that made rounds in the summer.

At one point my grandmother worked as a librarian in a reference library in one of the gov't buildings in DC. She used to take me to work with her on occasion. I loved drawing pictures and taping them up on the ends of the stacks. But the best thing was when she and a bunch of secretaries would meet in the cafeteria for their coffee break. I always got a doughnut to eat.

She died when I was ten, so I have no idea which branch of the gov't she worked for, or even the building she worked in. I sure did love going to work with her though.

Do you use your local library? Yes, but nowadays I borrow eBooks online via Overdrive.

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians? Not really since my grandmother was actually a secretary who was just promoted to the librarian job.

I remember my school librarian, and later the librarian at our local library. They helped me get over my fear of reading something totally new to me and help me find the kind of books I loved to read. They were amazing. Unfortunately borrowing and returning books is all automated now and no face-to-face librarians about.

I love that you were able to go to work with your grandmother! Wonderful memories.

I borrow audiobooks online from my library and listen to them via Libby.

Did you go to the library when you were little? I used to love our fortnightly library visits.
Do you use your local library? I don't anymore, have switched to my kindle app, but when the kids were small we would go often for their projects and entertainment reading.
Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians? Not that I know of.

I’m glad librarians helped you find the books you love to read. My kids have had the same from their school librarian; I’m very grateful for her.

That’s sad you don’t have face-to-face librarians any more. Thankfully we still do.

I’m glad you enjoyed regular visits when you were little.

When my kids were younger we attended all the library programs. The crafts were my favorite.

I adore libraries. I used to go all the time when we had one across the street and especially when my kids were little. We'd get a huge tote bag full of kids books and take them home to read over the next week. Now, that library has closed and I mostly listen to audiobooks so I rarely go to a in-person libarary although sometimes I still stop in just to see if there's anything new.

Did you go to the library when you were little? Yep even had my own library card. When I was in junior high it was open on Saturdays so a friend and I would walk to it and see what was happening. Then we would walk 2 blocks to the news stand/bookstore and spend money on Harlequin romance books!

Do you use your local library? Since the library cards have changed over the years, I had to get a new one. With this one I can borrow Kindle books thru the Ohio eBook Project. My county library is a member of the project. In the 1990's I spent a lot of time there doing genealogy research. Our county genealogical society has an awesome collection of materials even now. When the library did some remodeling a couple years ago, they gave the genealogy section their own room with a door that locks. And, it has a camera so the library workers upstairs can keep an eye on it. Every once in awhile I will go to look up something there that isn't online.

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians? Actually, yes. My cousin, Vicky that moved to my neighborhood in 2018 was a school librarian for most of her education career. She started out as an English teacher then went back and got her Master's degree in Library Science.

Fun fact about me: I chose the college I went to because they had a Master's program in Library Science since I wanted to be a librarian at age 18. I needed an undergraduate major so chose business education and a couple years in, I changed my mind about becoming a librarian. Although I did consider going back to get that Master's 20 years later but chose to go the accounting route instead. I could get that while living here and working full time. I would have had to have moved at the minimum of 3 hours away to get the library science degree... no online programs at that time!

I love libraries. I have wonderful memories of my grandma taking me to the library when I was little. She taught me to read when I was three, so she liked to take me to show off. :giggle She wanted to get me my own library card, but the librarian was being fussy for some reason. The librarian said I could have one if I signed for it, so I wrote my name, surprised her, and got a card.

For a long time, I lived in a weird spot where I had no access to a library. But now I get tons of books from them. When I want to, I can read really fast, so I hate spending money on books (although I still do). I have lists on hold at the city library, the county library, and the electronic libraries. Last year, I "saved" $12K on books (the county library keeps a running total on your checkout receipt).

In 2017, I started a third masters degree in library science, but I became too sick to finish. It would have been amazing to be a librarian. Now I just volunteer on the city's library advisory board.

I love that you’d fill a huge tote bag. I was afraid to lose books so I limited my kids to one or two books each trip.

Thanks for sharing that fun fact about you! I wanted to be a pilot at age 18 but decided to study math instead.

You win the early reader award! ;) I love that you were able to get a library card because you could write your name; good work!

I did use the library when I was a kid. By the time I was old enough to be in to YSA novels, it was off to the bookstore cause the library did not carry things like Sweet Valley High. (Plus the library was not very welcoming to non-adults. They never had any type of summer or after school programs.)

I don't really use the local library. I prefer reading on my Kindle. (An actual Kindle not the app.)

To my knowledge, I am not related to any librarians. However, I was a library aide when I was in 7th grade. The school librarian was not very nice, so I didn't really enjoy the experience.

The good news is my bad library experiences growing up did not impact my love of reading.

Did you go to the library when you were little?
We used to go all the time. The library was about 3 doors down from my grandmother's house.
Do you use your local library?
Not as much as I should! They have so many amazing programs!
Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians?
Not related to one, but I love our school librarian!! I wish I had known it was School Librarian Day, I would have done something special for her!

Did you go to the library when you were little?
Yes I remember visiting the library and used to love it

Do you use your local library?
I use it more now with the children. They adore our little library the childrens book room is fantastic and theirs also a great community room where we can play board games, do colouring and crafts and do jigsaw puzzles or just sit and read.

Our library hosts events during the school holidays, this Easter we have done an Easter Craft and also a little mini science workshop.

We have an automated system there to check books out, return and renew books but we also have two librarians and they are so so helpful and great with the kids.

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians?
No :)

I’m glad your bad library experiences didn’t impact your love of reading. Being a library aide sounds like fun; I debate working at a library later in life.

How fun that the library was so close when you were little! I’m glad you love your school librarian; good idea to do something for her! I’m sure she’d appreciate it any day. ;)

I’m glad to hear you and your children are enjoying your library time together. :)

Did you go to the library when you were little? Oh yeah! We loved it and my Mom loved it because it was free entertainment for us both when we were there and then when we got home with our stack of books!

Do you use your local library? I love my library. I used a TON of the electronic books and audiobooks, but I also go there and check stuff out sometimes too. They also have a great used book sale in the spring each year, so I always go check that out too. It's next week in fact. Do I need anymore books at home? No. Will I probably buy some anyway? Yep! :giggle I took my kids to the library a ton when they were little too, especially when they did their summer reading programs. They had the best time picking out a tote bag full of books and getting rewards at the end of the summer.

Are you related to any school librarians or other librarians? I don't think so, but like you we had a nearby neighbor that worked at our library when I was a kid.
