It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year | pad patter 8.24.17

School has already been in session here for a couple weeks. I always have mixed emotions about it because summer/breaks are more laid back with the lack of schedule and the fact that DH is home too (he's a teacher). Once school starts we also begin the schedule and driving all over town to get to our activities. But that's exciting to me too because there's something different happening every week, especially this year. DS is a 5th grader and he made the Mallet Band so we're going to have lots of those performances soon!

My kids went back 3 weeks ago. I do work full-time so summer becomes very busy between work, day camp, sports camp and classes for the kids.....and alot of driving here and there. I am glad school is back so our daily is routine again.

I hear ya on the mixed emotions. I used to yearn for and absolutely love the lazy days of summer but this past year didn't have very many lazy days. DD who just started 6th grade kept me hopping with all her acting camps, parades, swimming lessons, play dates and such all day long, every day. And that was just the tween. The teenager was busy too and even though she can drive herself, just trying to keep it all straight and make sure they both got to all their things completely wore me out. I know Back to School means homework and other activities, but at least I'll get a few hours in the day while they're at school for myself.

I've just come to accept that my afternoons and evenings aren't my own. They haven't been for many years and won't be for many more. Once that school bell rings, like most parents, my day gets really busy and I turn into the taxi driver, cook, tutor, etc.

My kids are grown but just had to pop in and say I always get a chuckle out of the Staples back to school commercials. Back to school has a different meaning for us now, it means I won't see my daughter (who works for Staples) for the next 3 wks b/c she is doing inventory and setting up up the electronics dept at the store for all the back to school sales and promotions, working overtime and wkends.

We start Monday. Though I am ready for a little more schedule, I am sad. I am a calmer, more relaxed mom in the summer. With the school year, we are going from 6am to 8pm and then have to just keep going to make sure everything gets done for the next day or activities, and that means that I get cranky when they are not getting things done in a timely fashion. :( In the summer, they have all day to do chores or whatever. Mean mom doesn't come out until late in the day if they haven't got things done. ;)

My kids started on Monday. But, I work full-time so I'm not home with them. My teenager would have loved to stay home longer. My 9 year old was happy to go back.

My kids go back after Labor Day. I am so ready. I have a Back to School bucket list. It's got chores (wash windows and screens) and fun stuff (see a movie during school hours) on it. I can't wait to start crossing things off that list!

My kids HATE this song because I sing it when it's time for bed.

"It's the mooooost wonderful tiiiiiime, of MY daaaaaaay."

Can I just say, I'm TOTALLY going to be excited to have ME time.

No one come visit me during the summer. I don't clean, it's not worth it. It gets messy five minutes later.

I'm like @AnneofAlamo except on the other side with "Yes, my kids are here, STOP TALKING SO LOUD, they'll hear you and become rabid!! Come down in my dark basement, we will be safe there!!!"

September 5th. First day of school. I have my little Santa out with the countdown timer. I'm going to CELEBRATE.

That video of the teacher is HILARIOUS and I LOVE that wine bottle! I need those. My kids.. (although apparently at every teacher meeting they're like "Your kid is an ANGEL!" and I'm super sure they're just tired from the long day and have mistakenly grabbed the wrong file. I let them believe what they want about my demonspawn.. it's cute for them to have hope.

Or maybe I just don't want to face that fact that I need to beat them with a pool noodle because they use up all their 'good' at school. (just kidding, I'm proud, and for those that aren't familiar, pool noodles are EXTREMELY soft floatie things for pools. ^.^)

But I'm in on the celebration for that time of year.... :wine

We don't start until after labour day. Both my husband and I work, so that means, I need to enroll the kids in camps all summer so they are not at home, clogging the toilets with homemade slime. (Oh yes, that is a true story.) This year, the summer schedule looked like this:
Week 1-3: Kids at Grandma & Grandpa's House in Waterloo(6 hours away) Mom and Dad (Party every night)
Week 4: Mom off work (but not Dad), go to Waterloo to say goodbye to Great Grandma, take kids back home.
Week 5: Mom goes back to Waterloo for funeral, Dad at Work, Naomi(age 12) at Girl Guide Camp, Ruth (age 9) at YMCA Overnight Camp
Week 6: Week at the Cottage for Everyone!
Week 7: Ruth at Girl Guide Camp, Naomi at YMCA Day Camp (Sailing), Parents Work
Week 8-9: Both kids at YMCA Camp (Ruth gets one week of horseback riding, Naomi gets a week of rock climbing and high ropes adventure), Parents Work

End result. I'm kinda excited about getting back to the routine of Fall...

I used to be like this ... but they are older now and it just isn't the same. My oldest is a Sr in high school ... so I really just want to slow time down. My youngest is a Jr in high school. I start classes for my 2nd degree on Monday the 28th - but the kids don't go back until after Labor Day. I kinda just want summer to go on for another 2 or 3 months. But yes, when the kids are little and your "Me Time" is stretched very thin during the summer (or perhaps nonexistent?) ... that first day of school does indeed feel like Christmas! :giggle Enjoy Kayla!

Well, I would probably love the first day of school if it didn't mean I had to go back to work as well haha. I'm totally feeling that video @berniek!!
