I did it ya'll!!!!!

My first page in my art journal. Thanks to Lisa @ArmyGrl I had some Rachel Jefferies printed up and was able to use them. (I also own the kit that Lisa printed up for me.) Also Lisa - do you notice one item?? ;) It's an homage to you for the package of fun you sent me!!

One thing I learned: Just because the little branches look AMAZING on my page doesn't mean I should use them on a journal that CLOSES!!! It's a bit bulky! LMAO! I guess they'll get broken over time.

Lesson Learned.

"Do it For You" Collab
blue flower, beige flower, word art, butterfly journal card, ticket, Don't Look Back ticket, gray tickets,

leaves and the second butterfly, from Rachel Jefferies but I can't find the kit right now. I'll edit this when I find them again!

This is fantastic, Susie!!! You go girl - you're off to a wonderful start!!

I can actually say that I like it! LOL It came out better than I thought it would, but not quite as I envisioned in my head. It's really fun though - and it is so relaxing! Well, except for the fact that I'm using my extra fastidious husband's art utensils and not wanting to break or leave stains on anything!! As I decide what I wind up using, I"ll buy my own stuff, but for now, it's "BEEEEEE CAREFUL!!!!"

That s outstanding, it looks like a fun project. What a treasure.

This is amazing! I also love the branches and would use them too (even if they get broken later)!

Yahoo! Look at you go! I love how it turned out and I love the branches... my art journals tend to get super thick too because I want to add all the things on my pages. :giggle I love the fun pockets full of goodies! :D

I am squealing with delight here!!! My heart is happy AJ hybrid is happening here at TLP!

Sooooo many moons ago (like probably over 12 years ago) I started a travel and ticket journal. Only 1 page in - ha! But, that was the life of a Soldier - start something new, have to move, change jobs, go to war, yadayada. I never got past page 1 - one of the main reason I went digital.

BUT...what I really want to share is...it is possible to attach and use VERY dimensional elements in a journal.

In the journal above, I have metal (the keyhole), I have a twig (much like Susie), and I have chipboard alphas. And I am pretty sure that was a Rebecca McMean gal - although I don't know which.

Several things to consider...

- For dimensional items to withstand the test of time, make sure they are adhered firmly. My twig from San Antonio, Texas was fixed with metal wire (top right photo - wire used in jewelry making - purchased from Hobby Lobby). The twig does not move. I used the metal wire to loop around delicate areas such as where the berries meat the twig. I know, only 1 page deep, but this journal has lasted over a decade and 5 moves. Also - metal wire is malleable. It can form around a dimension item - then be molded or stuck to/through the paper as you need. You can also use permanent glues on the metal.

The main body of work was fixed to VERY thick and robust card stock. Then the entire piece adhered to the journal page. When the page is flipped, the the white journal page on the reverse side is practically untouched (bottom photo). So, when working with dimensional mixed media, consider working outside of your journal first. Then fixing the entire piece to the journal.

Dimension will add bulk. If you plan on journaling directly in the book, know that straight lines and anything else can be affected by that bulk. If you embrace "imperfection" this will not be an issue. But if you need perfect - you may not be able to achieve it due to your next pages being unable to lay flat.

Bulk will affect how you store the item. Are you okay with the final bulky look?

Here is a junk journal. With so many pages glued inside, the bulk is well over the typical "size" of a composition book. I was and am okay with that bulk. I knew this would happen. Before you go super dimensional, consider if you are okay with a book that does not properly close. And are you okay with dimension that is thicker than the original spine?

Recap - When using dimensional mixed media consider:
-using metal wire to fix items to a page or help provide stability/rigidity, good for twigs and organic items
-use permanent glue options
-dimension will add bulk. Are you okay with this?
-work outside your journal first...then adhere the entire piece inside your journal

On one of my biggest (and fattest) art journals, I ended up cutting the spine and making it lay flat again using gaffer's tape. It's super strong adhesive on strong fabric tape that "gaffer's" use on movie sets to tape cords to the floors of movie sets... but works great in book binding too. I'll have to hunt up some pictures of that process if anyone is interested. That was on a moleskine type journal with a covers like a hard back book.

SO sweet of Lisa to send you those printed goodies!! I love this Susie, the butterfly pocket stuffed with bits and your nature accents are just gorgeous!

@Rachel Jefferies Yes it was!! I had the kit and she did too, so she printed some of the goodies for me and sent them to me! Just wanted to be sure you know that there was no sharing of digi kits. We both owned the kits. :)

I am so excited to dive into this new hybrid world!

my book is hardcover. Mistake. I am thinking I should have gone with a 2 ring with removable pages. Love and learn, right?

Wow Lisa, so much to cover!!

i am glad that people want to revive the hybrid pad!! I hope we can keep it “hopping”!

I never even thought about using wire! I’ll have to get some.

I am ok with the bulk. I think that’s part of the charm. The book. I have will
Have to do for now and I will probably start with a new type next time I’m
Thinking of a ring type. I might even be able to convert this when done as it’s a spiral, but it’s scores to rip out.
