From Wikepedia:

Groundhog Day, is a popular tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if he does not, due to cloudiness, spring season will arrive early.

The weather lore was brought from German-speaking areas where the badger is the forecasting animal. This appears to be an enhanced version of the lore that clear weather on Candlemas forebodes a prolonged winter.

The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in central Pennsylvania has become the most attended. Grundsow Lodges in Pennsylvania Dutch Country in the southeast part of the state celebrate them as well. Other cities in the United States and Canada have also adopted the event.

The 1993 movie (Groundhog Day) helped boost recognition of the custom, and the celebration has spread even further afield. In 2009, Quebec began to mark the day with its own groundhog.

So will the cuddly little Ground Hog see his shadow today?

Is anyone going to watch the Bill Murray Movie?

I love the Sonny & Cher song.. "I got you Babe"!

All I know is I do not want to be in the loop of repeating today over and over again, yet it is Friday so would that be a bad thing? LOL

Happy Friday and let's hope there will not be 6 more weeks of winter here in the states!!

I just watched the live stream of Punxsutawney Phil and he did see his shadow. We have a local groundhog, Concord Charlie, but I haven't heard anything from him yet. All I know is winter is in full force out my window today...about 4" of snow and I have the day off. It's nice to be home, but I do not want it to repeat over and over lol.

I totally forgot that today was groundhog day. I'm not surprised to hear we are going to have 6 more weeks of winter though. It got really cold again here yesterday and the snow started up again. I'm okay with that though. I like snow and I have a warm coat... so... bring it on! :)

and I love that movie. I think maybe I'll have to watch that tonight. I hope it's on Netflix!

Today is my youngest sister’s birthday. She is 21! My daughter always likes to call her a groundhog and even made her a cute card with a groundhog on it this year. :giggle It drives my sister crazy.
That is hilarious. Love it!

I assure you it's Spring in the Valley of the Sun! It's already in the 80's and they're predicting 87 next Friday. Don't let that silly groundhog tell nasty little lies!

If ballzac Billy sees his shadow today I may have to hunt him down and shoot him!!!! (Our local groundhog). I don’t know why but I’m so done with winter this year I’m ready for spring and warmer weather. (I’m in Alberta Canada so I should know better and we have had snow every month of the year. Not sure why I’m so fed up this year???)

I'm not at all surprised by the forecast! I totally expect another big storm before this winter is over! I don't really like winter but I live in NJ so there's not much I can do about it. I'm also not a big fan of the Groundhog Day movie - I think I've just seen it too many times over the years.

I always forget! We have Punxsutawney Phil, and Staten Island Chuck in my area! I think they saw the opposite. Murphy's Law!

I want Carrie's temps, too, please!

Here too Jan.. I heard waiting in the dermatologist office getting stitches removed that Phil saw his shadow. We have Chesapeake Chuck here but like your Charlie have not heard any word. It was raining here, although temps are dipping, and then at 9am the sun came out so if Chesapeake Chuck went outside after 9am, he will see his shadow... darn varmint! LOL I am so ready for Spring now. I have had enough Winter!

Stay warm and safe Jan!

How funny!!

I am cracking up with is name!! Ballzac Billy.. what a hoot.. I think we all need to make Groundhog Stew.. grab Phil, Billy, Chuck and Charlie and a big pot.. carrotts and call it a day! LOL

I've had enough winter. Well, I say that on the first cold day of autumn. But besides the cold, it's so brown and ugly after the sparkling Christmas decorations get taken down.

I made it out on a walk around the neighborhood this morning though, despite it being windy and barely 40 degrees. I developed a foot issue (probably plantar fasciitis) last November and haven't been doing my daily walks anymore. But it's not just my foot. It has improved a bit, but the cold weather has discouraged me too. So I feel so good having walked today, and hope to return to doing it regularly again. Maybe every other day to give my foot a rest on alternate days.

It's been spring here for too long. Unseasonable warm. We haven't had crap for snow this winter- so much stupid rain
