Earth Friendly | Pad Patter 2/22

We recycle a ton- I'm totally guilty of pulling stuff out of the trash can & preparing for recycle (wash & rinse out mostly plastic containers the kids throw in the trash despite me telling them OVER AND OVER they are recyclable!) We also recently switched to all glass containers for our leftovers, as well as have used reusable water cups for a long time. Our state just went to charging for plastic shopping bags, but I was reusing my plastic ones & using canvas type for a few years now. We also have only electric vehicles. I will NEVER own a gas car again. We do still have a gas lawnmower- but are actively looking to replace that with an electric mower. Also- one nice thing about our trash in our particular area- it doesn't go to a landfill, we have an incinerator that basically burns all the trash and converts it to power. There are a lot of arguments for both sides of the 'burning' but in my last bill there was an insert about a great peer reviewed study that confirms that Waste to Energy plays a key role in the reduction of greenhouse gases and complements recycling efforts. There is NO right answer- but if we all do our small part- that can make big changes in our future!

I recycle as much as I can, and police my family about it, i.e., "argh, why is this plastic in the trash?" ;)
I drive a 19 year old vehicle and my husband was driving our 20 year old Honda Civic when he replaced it with another Honda Civic in 2018.
I use glass storage jars, not plastic baggies.
I use a metal water bottle and avoid buying plastic water bottles.
I use re-usable shopping bags.
I'm trying to shop at my local farmers markets more.
We don't buy a lot of anything and sometimes buy used.
We use our phones and computers for a long time.
I'm vegan like @tanteva :love
I use the library and rarely buy books like @gonewiththewind :tu
I wish I could walk and use public transportation to get places, but that isn't possible where I currently live. Someday!

We try to do our little bit,
  • We recycle paper, plastic, cardboard, glass, cans and green garden waste
  • We recycle any old clothes if they are not donate worthy anymore. We have started to try and only buy second hand clothes from the 'Vinted' app and have found some really good bargains.
  • I don't drive (never learnt) so I either walk, car share or use public transport. My son also walks to and from college.
  • We all have reusable water bottles
  • We have shopping crates in the car (hubby drives) for when we go shopping instead of using plastic carrier bags. We had our shopping delivered to the house when we had covid 2 years ago and the delivery driver left the shopping crates and never came back for them :) bonus for us as we now get to use them every week for our shopping
  • We try to buy second hand furniture for the house and up cycle it if we can before buying new
