If you had to replace your mouse, would you choose wired or wireless? My mouse suddenly died on me tonight (no red light on the bottom of it and I’ve tried all my usb ports) and I’m not nearly as confident using the trackpad on my laptop so need to replace it asap. I’ve used both types before but am unsure which way to go this time. I use an HP laptop running Windows 10

@littlekiwi Jennifer have you also checked re battery? SOmetimes it is my battery that goes. If it isn't the battery (my mouse does not have a red light on the bottom either.. the new wireless ones don't I don't think) then I would still get another wireless mouse. I too have an HP Envy laptop with Windows 10.. I am not good with a trackpad either :giggle I remember when I was working I still had the desktop and my friend was using a laptop and I was like oh no... I hated them all (laptops) because she did not use a mouse! LOL Before you go and buy one though, check the battery and also there is an on/off switch on the bottom of the mouse sometimes (to save battery).. make sure it didn't get switched to off by accident. Mice here are not expensive, but if you need to replace, get a wireless one. (For what it is worth, that is my opinion anyway!)

@cfile, it’s a wired mouse that I have at the moment and I’ve tried it in all my usb ports which work for my ehd and printer cable

I’m looking at $15-20 either way here for a mouse
Sorry about that re the cost, but I would get a new one if it isn't a battery or switch issue. Sorry re the cost, but for me I have to have a mouse. Get a wireless as long as you have the port.. a little plug goes in the port and basically your mouse will be in business with a battery. Good luck with what ever you decide.

I am no good with a track pad either! I prefer a wireless mouse, simply because the fewer wires around to get in the way or pulled on the better :)

well looks like we had a spare mouse lying around (we accidently claimed for two mice with our insurance claim when we only needed one) however this new mouse isn't working either on my laptop so im really confused now

Oh well, I am a wired gal here. Have tried both and just don't like the wireless. Don't know why.

well I am truly stumped now - both mice that "didn't work" or "randomly stopped working" on my laptop work perfectly fine on my mum's laptop which is exactly the same age as my laptop is. Any suggestions on what to do?

Shut down and restart. Then try the mice. IF that doesn't work, remove and reinstall the software for one of the mouse and update the drivers.

PS. I would go wireless... but you might just have a glitch on your hands. :)

I’m doing a system restore to start with and will go from there. I think if I can get my original logitech mouse going that will be my preference as the other one is not as well known and when i looked into the drivers for that i was a bit iffy.

A restore versus a restart? Sometimes a restart just resets everything, and fixes it quickly, rather than a restore that might take some time. :)

the restore didn't fix it - it didn't actually take that long and I had shut my machine down for an hour or so between the first mouse not working and discovering I actually had a 2nd mouse which didn't help either

It might be a driver issue, as Jenn mentioned. You should be able to check for updates for it (you can Google for instructions for your operating system--I don't want to say something in case I'm wrong lol). Or you can go to Settings, click devices, Devices and Printers (it should be on the right). Whichever mouse is plugged in *should* show up in the next window: right-click the mouse and choose Troubleshoot. Perhaps that'll help? And if you have the mouse plugged in but it isn't listed under devices, then I guess something else is wrong.

Good luck figuring this out, Jennifer! I hate using the touch pad--and my laptop is a touch screen but that seems like so much work, to lean over the keyboard to "move" stuff around on the screen!

I feel like I’ve explored those avenues already but will take another look in the morning. The mouse has a yellow exclamation mark next to it in device manager and so far I have not found the driver for it whether I let windows find it or I look for it. What’s really strange is, the mouse has been fine since June 2017 on this laptop

I use a wireless mouse because sometimes I switch hands. I'm not really ambidextrous, but sometimes I want to keep working on my computer and my DD wants to sit with me. I can keep working slowly with my left hand while she cuddles on my right side.

Does anything else work in the usb port? Try opening a file from a flash drive. I had an older laptop a while back that stopped recognizing the usb ports. I can't remember what series of steps I took but basically I could make the computer ignore one and keep two working.
